On my way home from work, totally last minute, I decided to stop at the local mall called the Sun-Vet mall in Holbrook, New York. This is a very quiet mall so I was keeping my fingers crossed that not only would the eye doctor be in, but he would be available to give me an eye exam quickly. I needed to pick my son up from the baby sitters house and I only had one hour to do this.
When I walked into the eyeglass store, called the Optical Center, the woman behind the counter wasn't doing anything. I thought great, I will be in and out of here in no time. It turned out that the eye doctor was in but just stepped out for a few minutes. I took that time to start picking out a new set of frames for my glasses. The woman behind the counter was extremely helpful. For those of you who do wear glasses, you know how difficult this decision is to make. It is the first thing people see when they look at you. Not only do they have to be stylish, they have to be comfortable too.
The woman was so patient with me. I must have tried on every pair of woman's eyeglasses they had. The prices of the glasses ranged anywhere from $42 up to over $300. I knew that I did not want to spend too much. I had paid $300 on my previous pair of glasses and was never happy with them. If you aren't comfortable with your glasses, you won't be so quick to put them on. She helped me make sure they looked good, but were comfortable as well. The ones that I ended up picking out cost $125. I figured that was a good price. Somewhere in the middle of their cheapest pair to their most expensive pair.
Then the eye doctor returned and called me in for my eye exam. He was a pleasant man so I felt comfortable. The whole exam took about 20 minutes. He gave me a full eye exam, just like when I went to the regular eye doctor. Nothing was different and this was much cheaper. It only cost $29 for an eyeglass eye exam. If you want contact lenses, than you have to get a different eye exam. That one cost $69. They have a sign posted on the counter so you are aware right away. After my eye exam, the doctor explained to me what was exactly wrong with my eyes. He used regular wording not confusing medical terms so I would understand. He even checked out my old glasses to make sure my prescription was correct. It turns out that my old glasses are fine for a spare, but I will be needing a new prescription. One of my eyes has gotten a little worse, but not too bad.
At the end of my visit, I paid a total of $29 for the actual eye exam. $75 to put the prescription in the glasses, and $125 for the frames I ended up picking out. $229 total when all was said and done. The best part of the whole experience, I was out in less than an hour. I was even able to stop off and pick up a pizza for dinner!
I would highly recommend the Optical Center at the Sun Vet Mall in Holbrook, New York. It was a wonderful experience. They said my glasses would be ready today!
