Sunday Driving 101

Shawn M. J. Mann
Sunday Drivers are kind of like watching somebody eating Corn Nuts. Everyone hates them except the ones that are enjoying it. In today's fast paced society with all the technology and rush, it is important to remember to pause and enjoy life. Taking a Sunday Drive is one of the best ways to do this.

So what is a Sunday Drive anyway? Does it have to be on a Sunday? Heck, no. A Sunday drive is simply a way of getting off the main highways or streets that you take on a day to day basis, and exploring the road less taken - slowing down to enjoy the scenery. No matter where you live, there are interesting things nearby to see, and you will be surprised at some of the places you will find, even if you have lived in the same area all of your life.

Pack up the kids, make a picnic lunch, grab the camera, and prepare for an adventure! It is always a good idea to bring along a blanket or sleeping bag, some good shoes in case you decide to do any exploring, a flashlight, notebook and pen, some bottled water, and a rain jacket, just in case. I usually dress in layers or bring along extra clothes anytime I leave the house because I live in Oregon and the weather can be unpredictable. I always have my fishing pole and tackle box in the car, just in case I find a good fishing hole to try out.

You don't have to have a 4x4 off road vehicle. There are a ton of historic highways/byways you can take, which take you from point A to point B, just like the main interstates, but they are the "Scenic" routes. Have you ever seen the Disney movie "Cars"? There are treasures to be found on the byways, like on old Route 66. There is usually MUCH less traffic on these, so it will allow you to slow down and enjoy the drive. If you do get that jerk in the sports car behind you who is tailgating and talking on his cellphone, don't get upset and start a road rage session, simply pull off at the next available turnout and let him pass.

Don't just drive past the sights, take some time to get out and take pictures, read the plaques at historical landmarks, explore a trailhead, and check out those little diners on the roadside! I've had some of the best meals I've ever ate at some unlikely roadside cafes I've found in the countryside. They are the locals best kept secrets!

Also be sure to bring along a little cash, in case you come upon a antique shop, bookstore, or flea market... you might find some treasure!

I will be starting a new web site in the near future at www.sundaydriver.info - please stop in and share with us about your favorite Sunday Drives!
