Sunglasses: A Glimpse into Styles that Look Best on You!

Laura Leiva
Sunglasses are a fashion accessory that is either used for practicality or style. They have also been associated with looks that have become an icon in fashion, like Jackie O. and her oversized glasses or Bono and his rock star look. Learn what pairs look best, and transform any look from everyday boring to chic glam.

As with any fashion accessory, sunglasses also move with the trends. To avoid being outdated, try changing styles every two years or less. Also make sure that the sunglasses match with body proportion and bone structure for the best look. Shop within the appropriate age group in order to look more sophisticated, and also choose a lens color that is universally flattering to any outfit in the closet, or even skin color.

Face shapes can be key when shopping for new sunglasses. The most common face types are Oval, Round, Heart-shaped and Square. A good tip to determine what shape a face is to look in the mirror and draw with lipstick the outline of the face's reflection. When finished, step back and look at the outline. After testing out what shape the face is, styles are narrowed down, making it easier to shop for sunglasses.

Oval face shapes are the easiest style to look for because almost any type of lens can fit this face shape. A general rule when shopping for an oval face is that the frames should be as wide, or a little more, than the broadest part of the face. Be careful also to choose lenses that fit with the size of the head and facial features.

Round faces look best with any wide lenses like wide ovals, angular or square due to the fact they help lessen the fullness of the face. Try to stay away from small glasses that fit within the eye bones, because size can either make the face look more large or round.

Heart-shaped faces can wear any type of oval shaped sunglasses, and rounded or butterfly styles help balance this facial structure out. Since the chin is very narrow, try to find glasses that turn upwards to offset the bottom portion of the face.

Curved glasses look best on square face shapes, since it helps soften the jaw line. Avoid glasses that have a square bottom, because it will bring more attention to the face shape. Choose shapes that are more horizontal to balance out the facial structure.

Facial features are also important in deciding what glasses look best. Depending on the nose size, choose a lens style that can divert attention from the center of the face. If one has a long nose, dark colors look best, while small noses look best with a small metal frame as opposed to an overbearing plastic one.

Choosing sunglasses in regard to eye shape is simple. For close-set eyes, a clear frame, or glasses with a design on the sides can help widen the face. Dark glasses, large rimless, or chunky plastic glasses help bring together wide set eyes.

One other thing to remember when choosing sunglasses is they need to flatter the skin tone. Colors that usually contrast with the skin color often look best, as well as frame colors that match hair. The last tip in choosing glasses for your face is to make sure the eyebrows are still visible. The shape of the eyebrow can also serve as a contrast to the shape of the lens and the face.

With the variety of styles out there, it may be hard to find one that looks best for your face, but just knowing what shape the face is and what colors look best with your skin tone, you can find glasses that make you look stylish.
