Sunrise

April Fox
watching the sunrise it wasn't
like yesterday
wasn't the same but they
told me it was
they were feeding me fairy tales
swept away
princes and horses and glass slippers
that never break
and cut your feet
and no one there to tell you
to keep walking
while you bleed
leaving trails that fade
into the earth
a map
of your extinction
no one kisses the princess awake
no fantasy rides, no merciful woodsmen
no ugly ducklings
waking as swans
no magic wands
no kisses good-bye
no happily ever after
no happy endings

they tried to feed me disney
i gave them grimm.

could you feel me out there?
i breathed you in
i breathed you in
i breathed you in
and held you there
spit out all the things
they'd fed
shook my head to clear away
the things i'd seen and heard and felt
opened my eyes and looked
into the face of the sun.
