Florida is well-known for its bountiful oceans; the Atlantic on the east and the emerald green gulf coast waters; yet there are many old Florida areas tucked away from the main roadways, which lead the adventurous day-tripper to secluded pieces of paradise.
One such place is Sunrise Park, in Oak Hill, Florida. The park is located down Canal Avenue, a street just past the Oak Hill Flea Market. Traveling down the winding, oak-lined road, the salty air and velvet breezes alert the senses to the presence of the Intra-coastal waterway. There are two small, sandy sections right on the water; at hi-tide the waters rise and meet the level of the grass and sand.
The first thing that is most evident about this place, aside from the beauteous sky of blue and clouds of colorful pastel pink, are the fish. The water is literally teeming with redfish and varied species.
From the entire length of the roadway, looking out at the water in either direction, visitors can see the fish leaping up and out of the water! It is quite a sight to behold, making Sunrise Park a fisherman's dream spot.
There is a long pier, and a bait shop/restaurant. There is also a boat launch; and a clearly marked route that boaters can take, leading from the waters of the park, out into the Atlantic Ocean. The Intra-coastal waterway is teeming with fish for this reason-the Atlantic Ocean brings in a plethora of species, which co-exist in record numbers in these parts. Looking out at the water, the same view the Seminole and Timucuan Indians observed as they lived off the land and waters of abundance, one can become inspired.
Experiencing the small park is quite the experience, one I recommend if ever in the area of Oak Hill, Florida.
