Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort in Ocho Rios: An All-Inclusive Treasure

Julie Murphy
Thinking about going to the Caribbean? If you have always wanted to go to the Caribbean but never had, then you are at the right place. In this article you will find information about the Sunset Jamaica Grande, an all-inclusive resort and spa in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Included is the price of the room, all food, all beverages, the kids' club (club Mongose) and all non-motorized sports. One thing to note though is that some things do require "deposits" once you get there such as the phone, the safe and towel rentals.

The Sunset Jamaica Grande is a beautiful resort and spa located in Ocho Rios. We flew into Montego Bay and the bus ride to Ocho Rios was about two hours in length. We were greeted at the front lobby with tropical pineapple drinks and a bellboy that took our luggage. The lobby at the Sunset Jamaica Grande is quite impressive - it is open air and has a magnificant view of the ocean.

There are a couple of types of rooms at the Sunset Jamaica Grande. There are the standard rooms in their "towers", which are comparable to any hotel room. These rooms are located in the two hotel towers. Each room has a private balcony. We stayed in a cabana room - just a few feet from the ocean. The cabana rooms all have either patios or balconies (if on the 2nd floor) with instant access to the beach. There are also one bedroom suites which offer guests more space and a separate bedroom. If I had to do it all over again, I would have chosen the cabana beach front room again!

Aside from being located directly on the beach, the resort has several pools to chose from. Many of the pools have spectacular waterfalls, and there are an abundance of chairs to catch some sun in. Last year, two water slides were completed - one is a normal water slide that empties into one of the pools, and the other is a salt water slide that empties into a water basin much like that of Six Flags. The water slides are very entertaining and alot of fun, even for us big kids!

The non-motorized water sports that are included were fun. There were paddle boats, a water bike, kayaks, parasailing and a water trampoline. For a fee, jet ski's are available. We will most likely rent a jet ski next time we visit.

The resort has nightly entertainment that is a blast to watch. We saw singers and bands of all kinds playing mixes from Whitney Houston to reggae. The music just draws you in, and it is almost impossible not to smile and have fun. In addition to nightly entertainment, there are 8 bars located throughout the resort. Since it is all-inclusive, all drinks are included. They have pina coladas and strawberry daquiries in frozen machines, and they were exccellent. We alos learned of a drink that we called rumcream and amaretto - frozen. We ordered those and they were probably my favorite drink available. If you prefer beer, Red Stripe is on tap at all bars.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in the cost of the trip. Breakfast is at the buffet area every morning, and there is a big assortment of local favorites and items from all over the world. I must say though, the fresh pineapple was awesome - it was my favorite. For lunch, the buffet is available as well as two pool side grills that cook to order. They offer burgers and hot dogs with fries, chicken and fish, and grilled sandwiches. Our favorite was the grilled jerk chicken sandwich. For dinner, again the buffet line is open; However, there are 2 alternatives to the buffet - go back to the pool side grills, or get reservations at one of three fine dining restaurants (again, price is included in the all-inclusive rate). The three fine dining restaurants are the South Beach Grill, La Diva and Ginger Lily. La Diva was wonderful - it is brick oven style Italian food. Ginger Lily is Asian and South Beach is Jamaican infusion. All were good, but we loved La Diva. Just remember that when you want to go to one of these restaurants, you need to get reservations a couple days in advance (they book up to 2 days out).

On-site at the Sunset Jamaica Grande is a spa that boasts tranquility. Any and every package imaginable is available. My husband and I did the couple massage and it was so relaxing! I would highly recommend giving it a try while you are there. It will definitely leave you feeling refreshed and re-newed.

At the end of our vacation we agreed that we would soon return. It was our first experience in the Caribbean and we loved it. I would highly recommend booking a trip to this location that is all-inclusive. The price was good, and the experience was superior!
