Women watching football is as foreign as men buying Jimmy Choos. But the reasons why women don't watch football are reversible. And as a woman who loves her Jimmy Choos and her Steelers, I should know that shopping and football can co-exist in the lives of women.
Because let's face it-- two things men love are women and football. And coincidentally, February is the month of Valentine's day and the Super Bowl.
At a local sports bar, a couple walked in. The wife was completely inundated with her iPhone and what to order while the husband's eyes were glued to the TV screen and side conversations with me. I forced myself to include the wife in the conversations so she didn't think her husband and I were flirting with each other. You can bet they had an argument when they got home that night.
Scenarios like this explain the primary complaint women have with football. It's not that they hate the game; they hate the fact that their significant other is so enthralled with something that has nothing to do with them. This can be reversed by including the woman in the football experience. Do not ignore her or ask her to stop nagging you. Ask her to watch the game with you Sunday and buy her a cute little pink jersey of your favorite team. Better yet...take her shopping to get it.
As much as guys think women don't like football, remember back to your high school or college days. Did the women go after the debate team, or did they try to make the cheerleading squad to meet the football players? See it's innate in most women to like the masculinity of men who play and watch sports. So the notion that they have a complete disdain for the violence or brutality is wrong. They watch CSI right?
Men can also explain the game to their girls. Do not bring out a chalkboard and rattle off everything you know, but subtly explain to her that that was a punt, or a tackle. The key to liking football is not being a man, but understanding the intricacies of it. Because once you know the game, it's uber addicting. Plus, once she knows the game, the nags will turn into cheering for her team and good insight.
Also, try doing something for her. Grill some hamburgers and grab some cold beers before the evening game on Sunday. After you eat, you can cuddle and watch the game together.
Still not a believer? Well, women (and men) should know women have many incentives to watch the sport anyway. If they watch the game with their significant other, he won't have to leave to go watch the Cowboys play at his "friends" house, or even worse at the local bar. So you won't be ousted for Mike and Larry. And if he does want to go the bar, you can go with him and not feel out of place. It's another thing you can share with your guy. If nothing else you will know what is going on when he and his friends are screaming at the top of their lungs in the 4th Quarter. Plus once you step on his turf, you'll have bonus points when you ask him to accompany you to Rodeo Drive. He may even buy you something!
So this year when the Super Bowl rolls around, ladies tell your guy to get up and get the chips and dip, because you're "watching the game"!
