Wordplay Fun for Athletes and Athletic Supporters on Super Bowl Sunday

Linda Ann Nickerson
Super Bowl Sunday draws folks together each winter for football-friendly fun. Sports fans, athletes and athletic supporters (so to speak) gather at Super Bowl parties for festive foods, congenial company and the NFL's biggest game of the year.

Are you hosting a Super Bowl party this year?

Here's a fun activity and crowd icebreaker to play, while you wait for the big Super Bowl game and all of hose brand-new pricey and creative TV commercials to begin.

Pass the pizza and popcorn, grab a pen or pencil, and let's begin.

How to play Super Bowl Mad Libbers:

First, designate one person to serve as the scribe/reader for the game.

Without revealing the contents of the story, that person will call out the parts of speech (types of words) that are needed to fill out the story. As guests volunteer words, the scribe/reader will record them and fill in the blanks.

Once the story is complete, the scribe/reader will read the entire contents aloud.

Here is a sample Mad Libbers Story for a Super Bowl Sunday party (based on the general concept of the original "Mad Libs," by Phil. N. DeBlanks).

Super Bowl Mad Libbers Story

What a game! It wasn't even ____________ (adjective).

First, of course, ____________________ (name of a person in the room) performed his/her own rendition of "____________________________________" (song title).

Then came the ___________ (noun) toss and the kickoff. That's where the excitement began.

Right away, _________________ (name of a pro football player) ran past the ____________ (adjective) defense of the _______________________ (1st team name), just like a ________________________ (type of vehicle), while the __________________ (plural noun) surrounded him like a wall of ____________________ (plural noun). He ran ________ (number) yards to score the first of _______ (number) touchdowns.

Next came a Super Bowl skirmish.

Obviously, ___________________ (name of a person in the room), the ________________ (job title) for the _________________ (2nd team name), never knew what hit him. He tumbled to the ground with a look on his face that suggested he was seeing ________________ (plural noun) and clutched his _______________ (body part).

A referee tossed a ____________ (color) flag on the play. But it was too late. The damage was done.

Half-time finally arrived, and ________________ (name of a celebrity) took the stage on center field. Fireworks erupted overhead, as _________________ (name of a celebrity group) danced on the field.

Then the two teams returned to the field.

Up in the stands, football fans wearing ________________ (color) jerseys held up posters that read "_______________________" (exclamation).

From that moment, Super Bowl ________ (Roman numeral) was virtually over. The fans stormed the field to celebrate, tossing their ____________ (plural noun) in the air. The winning team poured ___________ (liquid) over the coach's head.

On-camera, after the trophy was presented, the quarterback announced, "We just won the Super Bowl. We're going to __________________" (place).
