Super Bowl Scores by Quarter 2010 Reflect Saints Dominant Comeback

Robert Dougherty
The Super Bowl scores by quarter 2010 were expected to be record breaking. But though the Super Bowl scores by quarter 2010 often looked big, they weren't up to the usual Colts and Saints standards. Both teams didn't score 10 points a quarter and total up to 100 points, as some may have hoped. In fact, they only combined for 48 points, and the Colts only wound up with 17. Yet the Super Bowl scores by quarter 2010 reflected how the Saints ultimately took over, especially in the final stanza.

The first quarter score started things off quite differently, however. Indianapolis dominated the first 15 minutes, which was reflected by their 10-0 lead. The Saints barely had a chance to get anything, while the Colts had two long drives for points. At that point, many expected the same score for the next three quarters, as New Orleans looked too far down.

Yet the Super Bowl scores by quarter 2010 will go down in history, since the Saints tied for the biggest comeback in the game's history. The second quarter started it off, although the score was a bit misleading. New Orleans only outscored Indianapolis by 6-0, yet it could have been much worse, as they dominated the second much like the Colts controlled the first. Still, all they got for it was two field goals and getting stopped at the goal line.

The third quarter was the most high scoring of the game, yet it too was a bit misleading. New Orleans outscored Indianapolis 10-7, to close the Colts lead to 17-16. That Super Bowl score by quarter doesn't reflect how the game really turned in that period, thanks to Sean Peyton's successful onside kick call. But the final outcome from the fourth tells the rest of the story.

The most glaring Super Bowl quarter score in 2010 is the last one, as the Saints finished it with a 15-0 final period win. Two touchdowns and a two-point conversion clinched their triumph, while the Colts were completely shut out. Peyton Manning is almost never shut out in a quarter, yet it happened twice last night, which made all the difference.

By tennis terms, the Saints got an 0-10, 6-0, 10-7, 15-0 victory, to add up to a 31-17 outcome. No team scored 40 points, and it looked like a defensive struggle much of the night, which defied all expectations. In fact, it was a defensive touchdown that sealed it for New Orleans, and perhaps prevented the 2010 Super Bowl from going five quarters.

This year's Super Bowl scores by quarter were quite unique, since the Saints seemed to run the Colts ragged for all but one of them. This will haunt Indianapolis all offseason, while New Orleans will remember those stats for decades to come.
