Super Bowl Sunday Activities for Those Who Don't Watch Football

Allison West
When the Super Bowl is held on Sunday February 1, 2009, I won't be watching this year. Why won't I be tuning into this important sporting event like everybody else in America? The reason isn't really all that complicated: I'm not a big fan of things like Super Bowl Sunday.

When I was really young, I remember my sister and I tuning in to see if our favorite teams (The Dallas Cowboys and The Pittsburgh Steelers) would win. No, I haven't been living under a rock; however, I'm not really sure who's playing this Super Bowl Sunday. Some years ago, I completely drifted away from sports and now I have to confess that I couldn't care less what happens on Super Bowl Sunday.

Does not watching the Super Bowl somehow make me un-American? I'm sure there must be others out there like me, who would rather read, go out and do something fun, or plug a good movie into the DVD player, than struggle through the endurance test that is Super Bowl Sunday. So if you're not really that into the Super Bowl, and you don't plan on slogging through it all, here are some alternatives for you.

One alternative to not watching the Super Bowl is to plan a fun night out with friends and family. Gather some other people who aren't really into the Super Bowl and go out to a nice restaurant and have fun. Another strategy for surviving Super Bowl Sunday: go to the movies that day. I confess that "the big game" sometimes grates on my nerves when witnessed on a huge big screen television with a piercing volume cranked up excruciatingly loud. So a matinee or double feature is a great antidote to Super Bowl Sunday madness.

If you're staying home on Super Bowl Sunday, there's a lot of counterprogramming on TV. For some whimsy, Animal Planet has the yearly Puppy Bowl! HGTV has planned an evening of home design and renovation shows for Super Bowl Sunday, and the Sci-Fi channel has scheduled an evening of fun ghost hunting adventure series that night. Scan local listings to find an old movie or a romantic comedy to enjoy. Settle in with some good food and drink for a blissfully guilt-free Super Bowl Sunday without football!

Whatever your plans, if Super Bowl Sunday just isn't your thing, I feel your pain. You're certainly not alone in your disinterest in football and things like the Super Bowl. Follow these suggestions or brainstorm to come up with some creative ideas of your own and enjoy your own football free Super Bowl Sunday celebration.
