Super Bowl XLV Live Blog Recap: Packers Beat Steelers 31-25

Zac Wassink
Finale: Aaron Rodgers is your Super Bowl MVP and the better team won the Super Bowl. An emotional, hard-fought second half that almost featured a comeback for the ages. Pittsburgh made far too many mistakes (three turnovers) and just didn't deserve ring number seven. Imagine how good the Packers will be next season if they can avoid over a dozen players ending up on IR. Scary.

Thanks to everybody for checking the live blog out, and congratulations to the Green Bay Packers. Your NFL champs. See you next season.

10:05 : Not this time, Steelers fans. The Green Bay Packers have won Super Bowl XLV on a great defensive play by Williams.

Live blog wrap-up coming up.

10:00: Two minute warning and it's an idiot penalty on Steelers. Personal foul pushes them way back.

9:5 7: PROP BET ALERT and it's a big'n.

Green Bay FIELD GOAL good. 31-25 Packers lead with 2:07 left. Now one of the league's most clutch QBs gets the ball needing a TD to win it all. I've seen this somewhere before.

9:52 : Rodgers to Jennings on third and ten puts Green Bay in Pittsburgh territory. An MVP throw.

9:43 : PROP BET ALERT: Roethlisberger with a Super Bowl moment throw to Wallace. Touchdown Steelers. This game is far from over, kids.

PROP BET ALERT II: Steelers go for two, convert on option to Randle El. 28-25 Green Bay leads. 7:34 to go.

9:38 : Pittsburgh isn't done yet. Have ball in Green Bay territory and fast. Quick score is needed. Now

9:32 : Nelson with another drop and Aaron Rodgers is getting frustrated. Would have been a clutch first down. But he then makes a gigantic play on third and it's Green Bay ball at one. Next sentence could be PBA.

PROP BET ALERT. Rodgers to Jennings after a sack. Touchdown Packers. 28-17. That may be a Super Bowl winning, MVP earning play.

9:25 : PROP BET ALERT: Mendenhall coughs ball up. Recovered by Green Bay. Third Pittsburgh turnover could be fatal if Aaron Rodgers has anything to say about it.

9:21 : 15 minutes left. 21-17 Green Bay. Pittsburgh almost in field goal range. Here we go.

9:20 : Call stands. Fourth down. Green Bay punts. Block in the back not called. Ineligible man down field is called, however. Pittsburgh elects for re-kick.

And a not good punt gives Pittsburgh ball at Green Bay 40.

9:13 : Beautiful pass strip equals three and out. McCarthy challenges it. First challenge of Super Bowl.

9:09 : Nothing happening for Steelers there. Roethlisberger has reverted to first half Ben. Ew.

Punt downed at Green Bay 25. Williams with stupid personal foul penalty pins Packers back.

9:07: Donald Driver out for game with ankle injury.

Steelers won't pay for choosing not to punt it on last series, as Packers are stopped outside of FG range. Pittsburgh ball at own 12 after fair catch.

9:00 : Roethlisberger sacked on third and long. Sack makes Suisham FG attempt a 52 yarder.

Zac's note: Blog error here. Original text lost. Kick was hooked. Badly.

8:55 : Mewelde Moore great second effort on run. Pittsburgh is now in Green Bay territory with all the momentum and down 4. Roethlisberger just missed Wallace on a home run ball. Could have been the game.

8:49 : Nelson drops pass. Harrison drops Rodgers. Mr. Mo-mentum has changed his address.

Pittsburgh ball at own 40 after punt.

8:42: PROP BET ALERT: Steelers run it down Green Bay's throats. Mendenhall ends it with solid touchdown run. 21-17 Green Bay leads. 50 yards all on the ground. Dominance.

8:35 : James Jones just dropped a touchdown. Wow.

Great tweet: " Sanders out for the Steelers, Woodson out for the Pack. Yeah, we really need an 18 game season. That'll solve everything."

Three yard return but Pittsburgh benefits from a bogus 15 yard penalty. Face mask call when guy had the jersey. Hmm...

8:31 : Shields back on Green Bay sideline. Good sign for Packers fans. As are these facts:

No team that has ever returned an interception for a touchdown has lost a Super Bowl.

Woodson is out for the rest of the game (collarbone).

Green Bay ball at own 20 after touchback.

8:24 : From reading on Twitter and Facebook, the halftime show was a gigantic F-A-I-L. Let's kick the ball already, fellas.

8:00 : HALFTIME. 21-10 Green Bay leads. Packers were unquestionably the better team. Rodgers is currently the Super Bowl MVP. Steelers deserve a ton of credit for that final drive. Roethlisberger looked like at two-time champion there.

Not even pretending I'm watching halftime. See you all in about 15.

7:57: PROP BET ALERT: TOUCHDOWN STEELERS. Ben to Ward as Roethlisberger looked like a two-time Super Bowl winning QB on that drive. Game changing drive?

7:55 : Ward makes a great sliding catch near the 20 as Woodson also leaves the field. Pittsburgh needs points before half.

7:52 : Both Shields and Woodson both shaken up. Shields to the locker room. Timeout Green Bay.

7:49 : Don't give up on Pittsburgh yet. Randle El goes up and gets Big Ben pass. Steelers ball inside Green Bay territory.

7:46: PROP BET ALERT: TOUCHDOWN RODGERS TO JENNINGS. 21-3 Green Bay. I am surprised, must say. Picked the Packers but *Jim Ross voice* not like this. Not like this.

7:42: PROP BET ALERT: Jarret Bush picks off Roethlisberger pass. Green Bay ball near midfield.

7:36 : Pittsburgh's running game still looks solid. Can give Big Ben's leg a rest. Or allow him to rush for six yards. Whichever.

Driver taken off the field, as well. Pittsburgh ball at own 35, 2nd and 5.

7:31 :Another solid tweet: "Omar Epps on the big board during a commercial-break promo. Mike Tomlin on Steelers sideline. My brain can't process this. #SB45"

Emmanuel Sanders, Pittsburgh WR, carted off field. His Super Bowl is over. Always tough to see. Young man's dream ends far too early.

Green Bay goes three and out this time and WR Donald Driver limping off the field. Uh ohs. Pittsburgh ball at own 22.

7:24 : Collins makes a beautiful tackle and it's fourth down. That means

PROP BET ALERT: Suisham from 33 and it's...good. 14-3 Green Bay leads.

7:20 : Another third down completion, this time Ben to Sanders. First down at 22.

7:15 : Big Ben's left knee just gave out on play action pass. He responds by rushing for a first down inside the Green Bay 40. Hmm...

End of the first. Green Bay up 14-0 but Steelers are driving. They desperately needed that first down.

7:13 : Steelers don't panic as they go back to Mendenhall. Have the ball near midfield. Another silly penalty (block in the back) pushes them back.

7:08 : Great tweet: " What I've learned through #SB45 ads so far: Pepsi Max is dangerous, don't buy it. And Doritos make you a pants licking perv."

Penalty starts Pittsburgh drive at own 7. And Big Ben throws a...

PROP BET ALERT! INTERCEPTION BY Nick Collins. Run back for a touchdown. 14-0 Packers. Steelers = stunned. With that said, 15 yard penalty on Green Bay for celebration. Steelers should start with good field position.

7:01 : PROP BET ALERT: RODGERS TO JORDY NELSON TOUCHDOWN GREEN BAY! 29 yard TD pass, a perfectly thrown ball. Nelson for MVP?

Kick is good. 7-0 Packers.

6:58: Two great commercials. The talking Chevy and Bud Light product placement were both wins. But they're making another Fast and Furious? In 2011? Cmon.

6:56: Green Bay WR Jordy Nelson MVP after first ten minutes. Both offensives seem to have calmed nerves. Green Bay first down at own 48.

6:50 : A few half-funny commercials, a couple of solid Mendenhall runs and an overthrown Big Ben pass leads to another Pittsburgh punt. Green Bay ball at own 20 after touchback.

6:43 : Nelson could have had six as Rodgers threw a perfect ball on third down. He didn't come up with it & Packers punt. Pittsburgh ball at own 20 after touchback. COMMERCIALS WOOOO.

6:41 : DOUBLE PROP BET ALERT: Offsides on Pittsburgh BUT pass is completed. First first down of the game is Rodgers to Driver near midfield.

6:38 : 3 and out. But...

PROP BET ALERT: Williams muffs punt. But it's all good. GB recovers at own 22.

6:36: Reader comment from Pat made below: "I live in Pittsburgh. I hate football. I have never watched a Steelers game in my life and I don't intend to start now. But EVERY PERSON in that stadium who works for the Cowboys, the NFL, and the city of Arlington should give up their seats to the fans who got screwed. Such incompetence is inexcusable."

Steelers start out on own 35. Here we go.

6:31 : Wife on opening video montage: "This is lame."

PROP BET ALERT: Green Bay wins toss. They defer.

6:21: So, when are Glee's 15 minutes over? Has to be soon.

6:15: No desire to see Just Go With It . I can't be the only one.

6:11 : Sam Elliott is the man.

6:07: For those interested in such things, my two favorite digits are "1" (Steelers) and "3" (Packers). I mean absolutely nothing by saying so, of course.

6:00pm : Welcome, one and all, to our Super Bowl XLV live blog. We'll be discussing the best plays, impact players and, of course, all of the greatest television commercials. It's Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Green Bay Packers. Just about 30 minutes away.

As the second youngest team in the league, the Packers can be contenders for many years to come.
