Super Bowl XXXIV
There have been many important plays in Super Bowl games. However, none stick out like the defensive play that was made by Rams linebacker Mike Jones. This article looks at the play that saved the game for the Rams on January 30, 2000 in Super Bowl 34.
The St. Louis Rams had just taken the lead on a 73 yard touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to Issac Bruce. The score was 23-16. The Tennessee Titans got the ball at their 12 yard line with 1:48 to go in the game. The Titans slowly worked the ball down field. After several completed passes and two penalties, the Titans had moved to the ten yard line and called their final timeout. There were six seconds left in the game.
Final Play
After the timeout, Titan quarterback Steve McNair set up a play to go to tight end Frank Wycheck. However, wide receiver Kevin Dyson got open close to the goal line and McNair delivered the ball to him. Linebacker Mike Jones saw the play develop and went after Dyson. Jones tackled Dyson at about the 2 and 1/2 yard line. As Dyson went down, he stretched out his arm. He came up short of the goal line by one yard.
This final play became know as "The Tackle." You can view it here. Since that game, the St. Louis Rams have fell on hard times. Often on St. Louis radio sport talk shows, the final play is rehashed over and over again. This play is engraved in the minds of Rams fans forever. This is my special Super Bowl memory.
