Super Fat Burning Foods to Make Your Weight-loss Resolution a Reality

10 Super Foods to Fight the Hunger

Cristina Aguilar
As I'm looking over diets "again" I discovered something in the research I've been doing that may just work for me and others. It's nothing new, countless of articles have been written about fat burning foods so I thought I would recommend some sites I found with lists of fat burning foods. Just remember it is the sugar, butter and other fats we put in these foods that make them fattening. Eating them plain isn't bad either, because these 10 foods I'm about to describe are all yummy and can stand on their own. I'm sure you'll find more fat burning foods while on this year's diet journey, including celery, broccoli and carrots, but for now I'm taking a look at some of the "surprising" (and some not so surprising) fat burning food.

First of all, I would like to define what a fat burning food is: Fat burning foods are foods that burn more calories than the calorie content of the food itself. Thereby fighting stored fat. The secret to losing weight is to eat and drink the right kinds of foods until you feel full and satisfied. Basically it's about choices. You can either fill up on a box of chocolates or fill up on an apple. If you choose apple you lose weight. If you choose chocolate...well you all know what that means!

Milk: Milk is a good thing. I got milk. I like milk a lot and when I was a teenager I drank a whole LOT of it, especially chocolate milk. But milk has gotten a bad rap throughout most of my lifetime. My sister says it is full of "hormones" but I say, go organic, and drink at least one glass of skim milk a day. Calcium absorbs better and faster from milk, dairy and green leafy vegetables than from a tablet, and calcium is the key to weight loss and strong bone structure.

Tofu: When I first tried this stuff I thought it was disgusting! I'm from Texas,a beef state, and to eat Tofu is not exactly done often in Texas, unless you hit the Chinese buffet and then it's so battered, fried and smothered in something you don't mind eating it. But Tofu is GREAT because it can take on the flavor of whatever you are making with it. If you can't eat Tofu, then snack on roasted soybeans. Those are great for any palette. Soybeans contain lecithin, which helps your body keep your cells from accumulating fat.

Spinach: It's too bad that a whole generation or two of Americans have not seen Popeye the Sailor who ate spinach for strength and beat up the bad guys. Spinach is as super today as it was 100 years ago. It has vitamin K, calcium, antioxidants, the list of benefits to this green plant is endless, PLUS it's got fiber. And what does fiber do? It cuts down cholesterol and helps you lose weight. So put it in your salads, soups, even breads.

Grapefruit: It think this must be the oldest known super fat burning food known to human-kind J Basically all citrus is good because the vitamin C in all citrus dilutes the fat that you are absorbing and also helps you release fat you already have. So reach for the fresh orange or grapefruit for breakfast, it's your best gut-buster.

Apple: I love apples, mainly in apple pie, apple fritters, apple cobbler. Unfortunately, I'm not that enamored of the apple when it stands alone, it just doesn't turn me on, but I'll eat it. It's one of nature's best cures for releasing fat deposits from the body, so an apple a day really does keep the doctor and heart attack away. The pectin in apples restricts the cells to absorb the fat. So if your stomach is growling, go for the apple instead of the bag of chips. I highly recommend the red delicious. They have just the right crunch to satisfy the 3 p.m. sweet tooth. If you just can't stand a raw apple, put a little bit of stevia on it with some cinnamon and a pat of butter and bake in aluminum foil for 20-30 minutes at 350. It's good and a great Weight Watcher's trick for a sweet tooth.

Jalapenos: Any hot pepper is good. Jalapenos are one of my favorite fruits. Hot, and good on nachos, salads, good with chicken, and stir-fry. Okay I love jalapenos they are my favorite spicy pepper but any hot chili peppers are good including habaneras and cayenne pepper. If you sweat when you eat these, don't sweat it, there's a reason, hot peppers burn calories by triggering a thermodynamic burn that lasts hours after eating.

Bananas: For years, I heard a banana was the most fattening fruit because it's so high in calories. But let's face it, it is plain good. Other fruits can fail you. You could go to the grocery store, buy a beautiful apple or orange that fails the taste test. A banana never fails it is usually good. This fruit has approximately 450 mg of potassium, a naturally occurring chemical that boosts metabolism and regulates the body's water balance.

Rice: Brown rice is better, but I can't stand it, so for those of you who are with me and won't eat brown rice either, here are the benefits of regular white rice. It's fluffier and cooks faster and it's good with just about everything under the sun. It's not as great for you as brown rice which still has the hull and nutrients, but white rice has one gram of fiber per serving. That's not bad for white and fluffy anything.

Whole grain: We can save the brown rice for this section. Nothing is better for the stomach, colon and burning fat than real oats, wheat, barley, and brown or wild rice. Three ounces of grain a day not only keeps your system cleaned out and free of future heart attacks, it maintains a healthy weight. So go for the oatmeal in the morning or brown rice if you so choose.

Sardines: A lot of folks in the USA tend to look at these oily little things in a can as, well...disgusting. I personally ADORE sardines, they don't beat the ones fresh off the Mediterranean coast, but they can be great with crackers. However if sardines is not your bag, tuna, salmon and another other oily fish will do. Not only will these fish keep your heart healthy. The great thing about these omega fatty acid, rich fishes is that they help with focus, concentration, real brain power. They also keep blood sugar levels normal.

Honorable mentions. Chicken, lean beef and pork. Protein is actually one of the hardest things for folks to digest, meaning it takes a few more calories to digest meat than other foods. So you may want to add these items to your New Year's resolution diet too. It's best to have the leanest parts of these proteins, and stay away from the animal fat, yes I know it makes the steak taste better, but you got to give up something!
