This is the Game Boy Player of the 16-Bit Era

Anime Boy
Ever played Game Boy on your television before? Yes we did, in fact, we had played it like three times now with adapters like the Nintendo's Game Boy Player and Datel's Advance Game Port; however, before any of these two existed, playing Game Boy on television seems very rare. Back at the time of the 16-Bit era, the only way to play Game Boy on television was through Nintendo's very own cartridge enhancer called the "Super Game Boy."

At the time the Super Game Boy was announced, nobody ever knew what the idea was, some gamers think it was a peripheral to upgrade the original Game Boy or a device to hook all Game Boys for played on television. A lot of guesses were made and a lot of theories went into question; however, when the product finally arrived to store shelve. The many mystery surround its name is finally reveal. The Super Game Boy is the first peripheral to let gamers played their favorite black and white Game Boy title on television through their Super NES.

So the purpose of the Super Game Boy is to play Game boy on television, big deal, just how super is it. Well for one thing, unlike both the GameCube Game Boy Player and Datel's Advance Game Port, the Super Game Boy is more than just a cool peripheral. The Super Game Boy itself can be a whole new game system as well and there are special enhance Super Game Boy games (GB games that had the Super game Boy logo on it) released for the Game Boy that when played on the Super Game Boy will enhance the feature of the game to a whole new concept. Many of those games also had features for examples in fighting games like Samurai Shodown and Killer Instinct, players can play multiplayer mode on those games with the Super Game Boy without linking with another player or games like Space Invaders which used the Super Game Boy upgrade that game to play a full 16-Bit version of the game. These are features both the Game Boy Player and Advance Game Port deeply lacked. Another big plus is that upgrading Game Boy titles are not just what the Super Game Boy can do, but players can also create their own borders and control scheme to their liking as well. Also one last thing to mention is that a few Game Boy Color games are also backward compatible for playing on the Super Game Boy like Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX and Dragon Warrior Monsters series.

So, in conclusion, the Super Game Boy's purpose is not just to let player played their favorite Game Boy on their big screen television but it can also be another Game Boy system on its own and those special enhance Game Boy titles are a part of it. It is unknown why Nintendo never brought back those Super enhance features of the Super Game Boy, perhaps a Game Boy adapter might be in the planning for the Wii someday in the future.

  • Instead of being an adapter, the Super GB debut as another cartridge but had room for the GB games
  • Though Super GB debut before the GBC, not every games from the GBC library are compatible

I had no idea the Super Game Boy wouldn't play these games - bummer :(

Wow that sucks! I just ordered Crystalis but it turns out to be a clear cartridge.

It would be nice if there was a complete list of the black Game Boy Color games somewhere on the internet to know which games are compatible with the original Game Boy and Super Game Boy

Hi Jody, some Game Boy Color games does work with the Super Game Boy adapter. To know which GBC games would work with Super GB, take a look at the GBC cartridge if it's a black cartridge (for example LoZ: Link's Awakening DX or Mortal Kombat 4) it'll work just fine. If it's a clear color GBC cartridge that had a bump on the top (for example Super Mario Bros. Deluxe or Pokemon Gold), it won't work plus it won't also fit onto the Super GB cart as well. Though the black GBC cartridge works, it won't had superior color display like it did when play on the Game Boy Color handheld, only Super GB compatible GB games had that features for the Super GB.
