Super Mario Galaxy 2 Video Game Review for Wii

Mario is Back Again and as Jawdroppingly Fun as Ever!

The long awaited Super Mario Galaxy 2 has finally been released for the Wii. It is the fourth 3D Mario platforming title in the series that started with the still emblematic Super Mario 64. Each level in the game are galaxies filled with worlds to explore. The level designs are one of the highlights of these games and reviewers and gamers alike find that this game delivers.

Plot

Well what do you expect with a Mario plot? To begin with, Bowser once again kidnaps Princess Peach, though this time he launches himself into space. Mario must go up to explore different galaxies and save his girl as we all know he will. Along the way, he helps out Lumas who need his help and also finds his old friend Yoshi (a great move for the series, as Yoshi is a big crowd favorite).

Gameplay

Super Mario Galaxy 2 feels very much like a game trying to push the envelope with platforming. It is a wonderful thing to experience, but doesn't come without its shortcomings. The levels of this game are brilliantly designed with countless obstacles that are intended to challenge as well as amuse you along the way. The innovative use of "gravity" allows Mario to make use of dimensions that the gamer doesn't expect. The only problem with this is that the use of so many different possibilities can create frustrating confusion when you want to jump in a certain direction but instead fall to your death. These problems do not occur often, however, and must be counted as part of the cost for such a fresh take on gaming.

The addition of Yoshi gives a whole new way of traveling around that has been lacking in previous 3D versions of Mario games. Yoshi's tongue can be used to swing around planets with ease; it's a nice feeling. Yoshi can also eat certain fruits that give him abilities like super speed and the power to reveal secret paths. Mario also comes with new abilities that feel right at home in the Mario world. Among these are the ability to turn into a balloon, use a flashlight to reveal things, and turn into an invulnerable rock Mario that flies out of control down cliffs. Sounds like fun to me.

Conclusion

This game has so much that it is great for any age group: something Nintendo has always wanted to stand for. There are some aspects of the game that are very challenging while others are just fun and wacky enough to be enjoyed by Grandma and the little kids. A two player co-op mode is also included so that you can enjoy Mario with a friend. The game has received outstanding reviews, none falling very far below a perfect 10/10. Well done Nintendo... well done.

I remember the original Mario games for the original Nintendo, I guess I'm old now.
