Super Saver Wins 2010 Kentucky Derby

Calvin Borel Claims Another Derby Title; Todd Pletcher Wins His First

Calvin Borel raced back to the winner's circle.

Todd Pletcher found his way there for the first time.

Now, the jockey can teach the trainer a thing or two about what to do next - celebrate, of course.

Borel will make a fine teacher after he schooled the Kentucky Derby field on May 1, 2010, aboard Super Saver to win at Churchill Downs for the third time in the past four years.

Borel rode the rail on a sloppy, muddy track, breaking from the No. 4 post for a 2.5-lenghth victory over Ice Box. The last horse to win from No. 4 was Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner.

If Borel has his way, Super Saver will have even more in common with Seattle Slew; the jockey told Pletcher after the Derby that he'd ride the bay colt to a Triple Crown victory. First up, the May 15 Preakness, which Borel and Super Saver will enter as favorites.

This is new ground for Pletcher, who had four horses in the 2010 Kentucky Derby and had failed in 24 previous attempts to win the race. He had two previous second-place finishers - Invisble Ink in 2001 and Bluegrass Cat in 2006 - but since that 2006 race, his best finish has been Circular Quay, with a sixth-place finish in 2007.

Pletcher's other three horses in the 2010 Derby were Mission Impazible, who finished ninth; filly Devil May Care, who was 10th; and Discreetly Mine, who finished 13th.

Here's the full order of finish for the 2010 Kentucky Derby:
