I could write an entire article on how Nintendo made a mistake by not releasing a sequel to Melee earlier, but instead lets look at what they need to do to make the game better. Some people may have seen the trailer for the game unveiled months ago. For those who have not, here is what we know so far for the new Super Smash Brothers Brawl:
- New characters debuted in the form of Wario, Samus(with no suit), Pit, Metaknight and Solid Snake.
- Levels looked bigger and better all-around. Most of the levels shown looked new.
- There will be a new item which allows characters to do some sort of super move.
That being said, the trailer did not show much. Here is what I, as a fan who still regularly plays the Gamecube fan, want from the new Smash Brothers.
- More Characters - This should go unsaid. The first game on the Nintendo 64 had 12 characters and the sequel had 25. So far only ten playable characters in Brawl have been revealed by Nintendo. I expect a roster of around forty to fifty when the game comes out. Anything less will be a disappointment.
- Interactive Levels - Levels should be bigger and have more parts that the players can use to their advantage. Those who played the Gamecube version know that certain parts of certain levels can be broken off or manipulated. I would love to see more levels that react to being blasted and bombed nonstop.
- More Levels - Another thing that goes unsaid. There were a good number of stages, 29, in Melee. I still expect to have around forty or fifty levels to play on. If there are only about thirty again, the levels better be unbelievably intricate.
- Online Play - The Nintendo Wii features wireless connection to the internet and Super Smash Brothers Brawl should be a game that can be played online.
- Cooler Items - It would be a lot of fun to see more Pokemon in the pokeballs that are dropped onto battles. We already know about the super move item, so Nintendo is off to a good start in this category.
All in all, Nintendo needs Super Smash Brothers Brawl to be as big of a hit as fans of the series expect it to. In six months, when it should come out, fans will be over Zelda and will need a game to convince them to choose the Wii over the 360 and PS3. Super Smash Brothers Brawl can be that game. No game offers more replay value and Nintendo would be smart to take some of the above suggestions and capitalize fully on their money-maker.
