Now to those familiar to the Superman mythos, Supergirl is well known. Kara Zor-El, the full name to Clark Kent's cousin debuted in 1959 in ActionComics #252. Kara is sent to earth by her dad, Zor-El to be "raised" by her cousin already there, namely Clark aka Jor-El. She became an important part of Clark's life up until the debut of The Crisis on Infinite Earths, in 1985-1986. This 12 issue series shaped the current DC Universe, and left our heroine to sacrifice her life to save Superman and the world from being destroyed.
This takes us to the show Smallville. With deep roots in the DC universe, the producers have always made an attempt to keep the true fans of the series happy along with the die-hard "comic world" fans. In a previous season, a young woman was introduced with the name Kara that claimed to be from Krypton. It turns out it was Jor-El that had brainwashed an innocent girl and forced her to help Clark realize his heritage that his dad fought so hard for him to take as his own.
SPOILER WARNING FOR NEW SEASON!!!
But the beginning of season 7 brings the real Kara to life. At the conclusion of last season, the cliffhanger left us with the idea that Lana Lang is dead, Lois Lane and Chloe were in big trouble and Clark went flying out of the Smallville Dam. So what happened to them? Well, Lana will return this year, Chloe and Lois will be fine and Clark recovers and has a new, alternate version of himself running around. This version, a small play on the "Bizzaro" character of the DC universe, is everything Jor-El is but slightly different. He is powered by green kryptonite, weakened by blue kryptonite.
So how do they work Supergirl in to this show? Well, the word from the producers is that Kara first came to the planet earth when Clark did, but her ship got wedged/stuck in the Smallville Dam. The Dam broke, so out comes cousin Kara. The actress playing Supergirl, Laura Vandervoort will appear for the first 7 or more episodes and possibly more in the long run. She will be the daughter of Zor-El as in the comics and will be the cousin to Clark then as well.
So last season ended with a bang, and the new season starts with an explosive addition. Here is to a fun and enjoyable 7th season of Smallville!
