I feel like Superman and Batman are similar yet have many opposite traits. They both are men and work on the side of good (depending on what comic universe they are in of course). They also have alter egos and the use of several weapons and artillery at their disposal, although I would say Batman has more by far to choose from. Which makes since because he is human and more vulnerable than the man of steel.
Sometimes they fight as a team and are amazing. They have fought against each other with different outcomes. As characters they have definitely withstood the test of time as everlasting icons. I believe it is because they appeal to a wide range of audiences from the young to the young at heart.
Superman came from another world, Krypton, and has several super human abilities. He defends the Earth from evil doers all over the galaxy and time. With his powers and skills along with weapons he is most assuredly a formidable hero against almost any evil forces that threaten the universes.
Batman on the other hand, is a mere human, but can definitely handle things for himself. Even though he sometimes has a sidekick. To combat against the opposing forces he always has his trusty utility belt which is full of useful items ranging from batarangs, to grappling hooks, to tear gas and so forth. Being human is a trait he must be prepared for and he is. With the use of bulletproof costumes and multimillion dollar weapons to account for his human weakness. Batman has saved the universes several times over as well and conquered many foes that were going to take over.
As a team they could not be stopped. With the strength and prowess of both hero's nothing could stand in their way from saving the world or the universe. In the alternate timelines the same could be said for their counterparts on conquering the world and universe. The two have teamed up at different times since the early days of comics, the golden age. Facing such threats as Lex Luthor or just evil scientists trying to dominate the world. Most of the time they are friends till the end but in some timelines they have became enemies.
As enemies it would be a most formidable opposition. I believe the battle would be prolonged by both combatants for quite some time. Superman with his super powers and Batman with his arsenal of weapons and strategic moves would certainly be entertaining. I would have to say in my opinion I believe Batman would be the reigning champion after the dust settled from what would be a tremendous battle. My reason for this is just one word -kryptonite. Superman's Achilles heal and end. The fighting would be over as soon as Batman pulled it out. Game over.
