British reviewers seemed quite taken with Kate's clothing. Jess Cartner-Morley, the fashion editor for the Guardian, wrote that Moss "has fulfilled every teenage girl's dream by letting them loose in her wardrobe." And Hilary Alexander of the Telegraph said that those who criticize the clothing line aren't understanding its real appeal. "What the public want to buy into is a little of the magic and allure that is Kate Moss's individual style," she said. "That is exactly what she is giving them."
But complain some fashion critics have, especially in the United States. The New York Post dumped on Moss's creations in a review titled "Duplikate." The Post said, "The line she's delivered... looks like Kate copying a lot of other people's stuff Kate's worn before." New York Magazine agreed, calling the clothing line with a single word: "snore".
At the grand unveiling on Tuesday, Moss herself took a turn in the window, dressed in a red dress as onlookers gawked. Hundreds of people waited outside just for the chance to get a first glimpse.
Once inside, shoppers were forced to follow a couple rules. First, a maximum of eight garments could be tried on to save time, as groups of shoppers were only allowed 20 minutes to browse. Second, there was a purchase limit of five garments per person. This was said to serve dual purposes. First, to make sure all customers had an opportunity to buy a piece of the new clothing line, and second, to hopefully cut back on people purchasing large quantities of clothing in hopes of turning a quick profit via eBay.
Moss's clothing line is comprised of 50 items, running the gamut from a plain white vest top for $24 all the way to a leather jacket that runs upwards of $300.
In spite of the war of words between fashion critics, those in attendance seemed quite pleased with Moss's efforts at the design table.
"She's got a really cool look, and she is also from southeast London so we can relate to her," said a 15-year-old Londoner, Daisy Taylor. Taylor came straight from school on Monday evening in order to join the throng overnight.
Yasmin Kidd, a 16-year-old accompanied by her mother, couldn't have agreed more. "I want to get first pick," she said. "I'm a fan of Kate Moss and I usually shop at Topshop."
