Supernatural 4.5 Episode Review Monster Movie

Monster Movie 4.5

The fifth episode of the fourth season of Supernatural aired on the CW on 10/9/08. Dean and Sam track down a shape shifter who likes to impersonate classic movie monsters. Warning: my episode review contains plot spoilers.

Monster Movie is a very fun and funny episode. Dean also had some great lines. I like the series but I really like listening for funny lines from Dean. The movie starts off in black and white with Dean driving and the boys discussing whether they should check out a vampire killing in Pennsylvania. Sam thinks they should focus on the end of the world. Dean is looking forward to a "straight-forward black & white case."

Dean and Sam pose as FBI agents to the local sheriff in the small Pennsylvanian town. No one seems to be overly concerned about the murder since they are all in the middle of celebrating Oktoberfest. Dean flirts with the local barmaid Jamie who doesn't seem too impressed by Dean at first. In another funny scene, Dean remarks that he wants to right some wrongs. Since his new body has no scars from his experiences before he died (the last time), Dean thinks he is a born again virgin. I laughed; I laughed a lot throughout this episode.

Dean and Sam quickly realize that the vampire killing is not a typical vampire killing; especially win the witness describes the vampire as Dracula, just like the movies. Dean later asks Sam 'Do you think this Dracula could turn into a bat? That would be so cool." The best part is he says this as he has a beer mustache. He drinks a lot of beer this episode. After all, it is Oktoberfest.

Next victim is killed by a werewolf or I should say a wolf man. Sam realizes it is a real werewolf since the monster left the victim's heart behind. Apparently real werewolves always take the heart. The next victim is strangled by the mummy. At this point, Sam is getting fed up by the obviously stage scenes and says "This is stupid." It may be stupid, but it is very funny.

Turns out the killer is a shape shifter who was tormented as a kid but found solace in classic monster movies. Now as an adult, he is re-enacting his favorite movies. He of course decides Jamie is really Dracula's soul mate and kidnaps her and Dean. In my next favorite scene, Dean is now dressed in an Oktoberfest outfit and is about to be electrocuted like Frankenstein until luckily for Dean the pizza delivery boy arrives and in interrupts the killing. Dracula answers the doorbell to collect his pizza and give the boy a coupon. Just another odd moment that makes the episode so funny.

Sam finally figures out who the shape shifter is and breaks in the house, which isn't hard since Dracula forgot to lock his front door, and rescues Dean. Meanwhile, the shape shifter is telling Jamie his sad life story which really doesn't garner much sympathy from her. In another funny quote, Jamie says "You are lonely because you kill people" and he replies "Perhaps I kill people because I am lonely." Dean and Sam break in to save Jamie but the shape shifter is doing a pretty good job of kicking their butt. Jamie saves the day by shooting the shape shifter in the chest. He very dramatically says "Beauty killed the Beast." I am sure he died happy knowing he got to say the final word.

Monster Movie is a big Abbot & Castello Meets the Monsters farce, which was very, very funny. Every series needs that one funny episode and this was it. I loved it. Dean loved it too because he got his "happy ending with a happy ending." I had to roll my eyes on that one. The script writer for this episode deserves an Emmy. I give the movie 5 out of 5 stars.
