Supernatural: Episode 4.6 Review Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever 4.6

The sixth episode of the fourth season of Supernatural aired on the CW on 10/23/08. The episode is titled Yellow Fever. Yellow Fever finds Dean infected by a ghost virus that usually results in death. Warning: my episode review contains plot spoilers.

This season of Supernatural just keeps getting better and better. Yellow Fever is another stand alone episode that focuses on an individual story instead of the continued plot development of the end of the world. Dean and Sam are posing as FBI agents again, this time investigating seemly healthy men dying of heart attacks.

After interviewing the local sheriff and a local creepy guy, Sam figures out that the men were infected with a virus from the ghost. Over a 24 hour time period the men develop intense fear, paranoia, and hallucinations which ends in their heart stopping. Sam quickly realizes Dean has been infected. In the funniest twist ever, the virus infects "dicks". Yep, men who are mean and bullies are susceptible to the virus. Dean is shocked that Sam is infected too and says to Sam "Well you are a dick too." Sam just deadpans back "Apparently I'm not." Seriously I laughed out loud. Yeah the episode centers on a depressing story of an innocent man being wrongly murdered but if you get past that story, the episode turns out to be pretty funny.

Sam calls in Bobby to help save Dean since the clock is running. Plus Dean turns out to be no help since now he is scared of every little thing. In another funny scene, Dean runs away from a ghost and leaves Sam to fend for himself. Sam finds Dean cowering in fear by his car. Yep, he is pretty useless. The episode is full of funny lines and little innuendos that most viewers will probably miss. My personal favorite is the name of the town's softball team the "Gamecocks." Their competition is called the "Cornjerkers."

Sam and Bobby save the day by scaring the ghost to death. Yeah the ending is kind of sad because the ghost was wrongly killed in the first place. They couldn't lay his body to rest since he had been dragged to death twenty years earlier. The ghost did get his revenge by killing his murderer and the sheriff but unfortunately he had to relive his horrible death in order to save Dean.

The episode does a great job of showing off Jensen Ackles ability to be funny. Yellow Fever even does a great job of showing off his lip synching talents. Stay around for the ending credits and you will be treated to a very funny clip of Jensen lip synching to Eye of the Tiger. Oh my goodness, I about died laughing. My boyfriend on the other hand walked out of the room and muttered something about not very original but I loved it. I give the episode 5 out of 5 stars.
