Supernatural: Location, Location, Location! -- Or, Where on Earth is Purgatory?

Finally after a whole season of wondering what is wrong with Sam (Jared Padalecki), we finally get the answer, he doesn't have a soul. According to Castile (Misha Collins), who uses his angelic powers to stick his arm into Sam in an attempt to find out, the younger Winchester is lacking his soul. Though Sam escaped from Hell his soul was left behind in "the cage" that contains Lucifer. Even though Dean (Jensen Ackles) would like to believe that Castile can zip in, grab Sam's soul, and zip out again, the embattled (he is the middle of an angelic civil war) angel assures the Winchester brothers that it won't be that easy. Though he is uneasy with his soulless brother, Dean finally consents to working together again.

Meanwhile, Grandpa Samuel (Mitch Pileggi) has a secret of his own, it seems that the older Winchester has secretly been searching for Purgatory. Why? Because wayward Crossroad Demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard - side note: also excellent in the series "Firefly"), the reigning king of Hell, would like to expand his budding empire to include Purgatory. When asked why he is searching for Purgatory, the demon utters the famed real estate motto, "location, location, location." The beans on the whole affair began to be spilled by the great grand daddy of all vampires, the Alpha Vampire (Rick Worthy), who was captured by Samuel for the sole purpose of locating Purgatory.

In the end it is revealed that Samuel has been working for Crowley all along (or as the brothers eloquently put it, Samuel is Crowley's bitch). It is also revealed that Crowley is the person responsible for resurrecting both Sam and Samuel from Hell. And while Dean hates the idea of "punching the clock" on behalf of Crowley, Sam convinces him to let it be for a while longer, so he can get his soul back.

What Next?
Personally, Season 6 finally got going for me. We now know what is wrong with Sam, and what is motivating Samuel. We also have the reappearance of Crowley, which is always a treat for those who love the show's witty quips. While I am sure Sam will get his soul back by season's end, the road there and back will be fun to watch. One pet peeve I have though is, why doesn't the CW create one vampire mythology to fit all shows? Viewers are re-introduced to the Alpha Vampire at the same time that "The Vampire Diaries," introduces its fans to a similar set of vampires. Sorry, I just like a little order with my mythologies.

Dean to Samuel (regarding the capture and torture of the Alpha Vampire): "Putting jaws in a fish Bowl. Now how do you think that's going to end?"

Crowley to the Hunters (now working for him): "Me Charlie, you Angels."

Obscure Mythological References:
"The Devine Comedy (la Divina Cmmedia)," by Dante Alighieri (circa 1308) is used as a reference for Purgatory by the Alpha Vampire.
