The Season 4 finale left us with Lucifer being freed from Hell due to Sam being used by the demons to get him to inadvertently break the seal on the doorway to hell. Dean tried to get to him to tell him not to kill Lilith, the demon, because she is the last seal but he was too late to tell Sam.
Season 5 begins with Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) at the chapel and Lucifer's prison opening. They will need to deal with the aftermath of the devil's escape and news from Chuck the Prophet (Rob Benedict) that Castiel (Misha Collins) was killed by the archangels. Now Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) and his army of angels are after them.
While Season 4 dealt a lot with causing tension and struggles between the Winchester brothers, longtime fans will be happy to know that writer/producer Eric Kripke has said Season 5 promises to be one of the most optimistic seasons of the series. Sure, the Apocalypse has begun and Sam and Dean are in the middle of it but it can still be an optimistic season, right?
This season has something new and something old for everyone. This season will see a future episode set five years in the future, several celebrity ghost episodes, including a killer Abe Lincoln, God and the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Some of the returning characters include Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Jo (Alona Tal), Jessica (Adrianne Palicki), Rufus (Steven Williams) and many other hunters. Something really big and important is going to happen to Bobby early on in the season, so that is something to look forward to!
In a new angle, Lucifer will be shown as a sympathetic character, who feels betrayed by God and the angels, with human emotions and doubt. No doubt, he will try to play on Sam and Dean's good side to get them to join his army against God. It will be very interesting and thought-provoking to say the least.
Be sure to watch Season 5 of Supernatural on September 10th!
