SuperSonics Turned OKC Thunder Are Cutting it Too Close

Requiem for a Visual Disaster

Sandy Dover
The Oklahoma City Thunder have been cutting it close during the entire 2008 summer offseason. Cutting it close moving from the Pacific Northwest to the Plains. Cutting it close with a logo design. Now, they have finished their designs for the new uniforms, having cut close thrice. The problem is that their new jerseys are quite pedestrian and lame.

Using a sky blue hue as the main color theme for the team, the jerseys are a cross between the New York Knicks, Charlotte Bobcats and Golden State Warriors' own uniforms. With a copycat V-neck line and a front insert at the V-point, they remind of the Bobcats and Warriors. The bright orange seems to borrow directly from the Bobcats and Warriors as well, and the blue-orange-black color placement lends directly to the Knickerbockers of New York, especially on the white-based home jerseys.

While simplicity can be a great thing, the Thunder uniforms look as if they were quickly made, lacking any sort of legitimate creativity and looking more like clip art as a result (which is what actually ended up happening). The actual look of the uniforms looks like the 1996 All-Star Game uniforms that were made when the East and West teams played in San Antonio. One legitimate problem may come in how star player Kevin Durant is marketed in such a poor look, going from the classic stylings of the Seattle SuperSonics' threads immediately to an inferior product to play in, visually.

In any case, at least the Thunder won't have to play in basic black and white practice uniforms, as was done during the summer league games in the offseason. Get used to sky blue and Bobcats-Warriors-Knicks blue!
