FLYING OINTMENT:
This is one of the most sacred and magical ointments that witches have to smear on their bodies to acquire the power of flight. We have all, as children, depicted a witch in a drawing as an old woman on a broomstick flying at a full moon.
According to widespread tradition, witches rub this ointment all over their bodies and fly naked to their sabbaths on their broomsticks and alleged ingredients of items include fat of babies, soot, the blood of bats, aconite, hellebore, hemlock and Belladonna.
There is a very old saying with regard to brooms or modern day brushes
"NEVER BUY A BRUSH IN MAY OR YOU'LL BRUSH ONE OF YOUR FAMILY AWAY"
Most people are familiar with the age-old superstition that witches fly on broomsticks to their coven although in ancient times other implements were reputed to be used, shovels, eggshells, animals or cleft sticks. It is also said that "a broom accidentally left out on a saturday night is likely to disappearof its own accord.
Conversley, a broomstick may be used to deter witches, according to ancient superstitions. If you want to keep a witch away you must lay a broomstick across your doorway and this will prevent a witch from entering your home.
Broomstick weddings are still held today as a marriage ceremony. These marriages are legal once the couple step over a broomstick into a new home that they intend to stay as man and wife. The marriage agreement is usually for 7 years and can be undone by reversing the process at any time during the first year of marriage.
