* If a woman wanted the sex of her child to be male then she must wear blue all the time

* likewise, if she wanted a female, she had to wear pink throughout the pregnancy

* Pregnant women were not allowed to spin wool as this meant their child would die by

hanging

* Pregnant women were forbidden to prepare food or deal with farm animals in case she

contaminated them

* If another woman is having problems conceiving then all she had to do to ensure

success was to hug a pregnant woman

* Pregnant women were once confined for full term in case fairies intefered with their

unborn child

* It was once thought that if a woman wanted her child to be fairskinned she should

look at a corpse

* Another belief is if the unborn child kicks on the left-hand side of the womb it is a boy

and if on the right-hand side, it is a girl.

* If a rat runs around the feet of a pregnant woman this is very bad luck

* If a ferret, stoat or weasel jumps over the tummy of a pregnant woman then the child

will be born with a birthmark

* If a pregnant woman steps over a grave this ensures an early death for her child
