Supply List for Starting Quilting - Basic Quilting Supplies

Beth N.
Ready to get started with quilting? Here is a quick supply list of basic quilting supplies that you might need to get you going.

In it's most basic form, the only tools you need to quilt are fabric, batting, a needle and thread and scissors. However, there are many tools available that not only will make your quilting faster and easier, but that can also really improve the quality of your finished quilts. Not everything listed below is a necessity, but all of these tools are a great addition to a tool kit for a beginning quilter.

Sewing Machine

Even if you plan to quilt by hand, a sewing machine is an invaluable tool to have in your arsenal. It can be used to piece together your quilt blocks. If you plan to do most of your quilting by hand then a very basic sewing machine will suffice. If you are on a budget try looking for a used one at auctions, in the classifieds or at thrift stores or garage sales.

If you want to try your hand at machine quilting you will probably want to invest some money to buy a higher grade sewing machine. For the most part, though, fancy machines are not a necessity, but more of a fun luxury item you can use to add another element of interest to your quilting projects.

Scissors

One of the most important tools you will use in quilting is a pair of scissors. It's a wise idea to invest in a high quality pair of scissors that will last a long time and make precise cuts. Avoid using your fabric scissors on paper to help keep them in the best shape possible.

A Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat

Although not absolutely necessary, a rotary cutter and cutting mat can greatly increase your speed. The rotary mat protects your work surface and the rotary cutter allows you to cut lots of quilt blocks very efficiently.

Fabric

If you plan to quilt you need some fabric. Cotton is generally the most popular fabric for quilting and comes in an enormous array of colors and patterns to fit just about any style of quilt you are planning on doing. Shopping for new fabric for your quilts is undoubtedly one of the most fun parts of quilting, so let loose and enjoy yourself.

You can often find great deals on fabric at your local craft store, but be sure to also check online for some wonderful bargains. A lot of times you can find unique and interesting fabrics at online auction sites as well, so don't rule them out as a possible source. As a quilter you can never have too much fabric!

Batting

You'll need to select the right type of batting for your project as well. There are a number of different types of batting and each is suitable for a different type of project, so make sure to do your research and find the one that is right for your needs.

Needle & Thread

It goes without saying that in order to quilt you need a needle and thread in your toolkit.

These basic supplies should go a long ways toward getting you off and running with your quilting. Good luck and have fun!
