Support Breast Cancer Awareness: 5 Ways You Can Help

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Susan Sosbe
My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor. She had a mastectomy about eight years before she passed away from other health problems. Because of my grandmother, breast cancer awareness is a cause I support wholeheartedly.

According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Awareness is a key factor to catching it early. Here are some things you can do to support breast cancer awareness.

Click to Give
- At breastcancersite.com, you can click to help give women free mammograms. Each time you click, a site sponsor will donate money to help women in need receive a mammogram that may catch breast cancer early enough for treatment. You can also enter your email address for daily reminders to click.

Since starting their program in 2000, the site has funded free mammograms to over 16,000 women. You can help fund even more just by a simple daily click.

You can also help get more people to click by linking to the site whenever you can. By placing the link on your website and in outgoing emails, it will help make more people aware of the opportunity to click to give.

Buy Pink
- Also at breastcancersite.com you will find the breast cancer site store. Each purchase made will help fund a mammogram for a woman who may not be able to afford one. Items start at $2.00 and there are many products to choose from.

There are also items that can be found in local stores, such as Wal-Mart. My sister and I have an ongoing tradition to buy items that support breast cancer awareness and research. Every time we see an item, we'll buy one for each of us. We've found items such as shirts, socks, bags and even toothbrushes.

Schedule a Mammogram
- If you've reached the age where you need yearly mammograms but have been putting it off, stop procrastinating. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to get your mammogram.

Support a Friend - If you've already had your mammogram or do not yet need one, go with a friend who does. She may be more comfortable having the companionship of a friend.

Self Breast Examinations
- Women of all ages should do monthly self examinations. By doing self examinations, you will become more aware of what is normal for your breasts. I found a lump in one of my breasts not long ago. Although it turned out to be non-cancerous, it would have gone undetected if not for self examination.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but don't limit your support to just October. Be aware all year long.
