Support Our Troops: Send a Thanksgiving Package to a Soldier

Thanksgiving Care Package

Cecilia Cooper
Imagine spending Thanksgiving miles away from family and friends, and working because soldiers can't take a day off when they're stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other hostile places. It will brighten your adopted soldier's day to receive a package full of Thanksgiving goodies. While you may be planning your own Thanksgiving meal and activities, think of how you can send Thanksgiving overseas to a soldier. First, read about how to adopt a soldier, and then get working on your Thanksgiving care package.

Thanksgiving Care Package - Cookies and Cupcakes

It is easy to make a lot of cookies, and fun to decorate them. You can make plain sugar cookies, and then decorate them with Thanksgiving-themed colors or shapes. Make cookies in the shape of turkeys and pilgrims. You can also make cupcakes, and decorate them with bright fall colors-red, yellow, and orange.

Thanksgiving Care Package - Decoration

Send some bright reminders of fall and Thanksgiving. You or your kids can make drawings of turkeys to send to the soldier. You could also include a small toy turkey in the package. Send some fall-themed decorations, such as a fall wreath, or fall-colored crepe streamers. Head over to your local Wal-Mart or Target and browse their selection of Thanksgiving paraphernalia.

Thanksgiving Care Package - Thanksgiving Dinner

Food is one of the more difficult things to send over. You may want to just stick to fall-themed candy, or easy to send snacks like potato chips and popcorn. However, it you can try to send them a reminder of Thanksgiving dinner with these ideas. The soldiers are usually provided with a special Thanksgiving dinner, but you can send them their own personalized feast. The first foods that come to mind when you think of Thanksgiving are turkey, cranberries, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie. Now, you can't pack most of these Thanksgiving foods in a box, so you'll have to send the next best thing.

For turkey, you can send turkey jerky and for cranberries, try dried cranberries. Many of the vegetables can be found in canned form, so you can send canned peas, carrots, corn, canned gravy, or canned cranberry sauce. Some mashed potato mixes come in pouches, where you just need to add water and serve. To keep your soldier warm, send some hot chocolate mix or spiced cider mix.

Show your thanks to your soldier by sending him or her a heart-felt Thanksgiving package.

Thanks for this great article! Its important to remember all of our soldiers out there during the holidays and show that we care about them. My brother is serving his country in Korea and during this holiday season I am thankful for him and all the sacrifices our armed forces are making. When you are out shopping or sharing time with families, take a moment to give thanks for your freedom.

You people are clueless. I am a retired military man, who served in OEF/OIF, the entire purpose of this war is to bring freedom to a people who have never experienced it. In so doing that would also bring security to our shores by NOT allowing Al Quada and other terrorist organizations safe haven. We warned you about this for over 30 years, and you ignored us, then after 911 we said "we told you it was coming", then you forgot us. Start reading the history of the middle east, educate yourself. Otherwise your just another ignorant American manipulated by the liberal press. Support the troops by supporting the mission, otherwise you just bring down the moral of the troops. Dont think you can support the troops and not support the mission, its demoralizing and Al Quada used it for propoganda !

Great idea! I agree with P.L. Ward - we should all support the troops no matter how we feel about the war.

Great ideas here. Everyone should support the troops regardless of how they feel about the war.

Your article is wellw-written and thoughtful. As someone who is savy and resourceful enough to find out on my own how to adopt a soldier, I thank you for such a lovely idea!
