Support for Residents During the Gowanus Canal Cleanup
Neighborhood: Gowanus
Brooklyn, NY 11215
United States of America
The Gowanus Canal is lined with sludge from dumping and has become an eyesore. Residents are wondering when the proposed cleanup will move along for the four mile long canal.

According to City Hall News, there are concerns about development near the cleanup site. A combination of rezoning and the recession has halted building plans and residents may feel like their concerns are not being addressed.

Residents who want to voice their opinion on the clean up can contact the Gowanus Canal Citizen Advisory Group (CAG) and attend community meetings. They are the liaison between the community and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Meeting dates can be found on Facebook , Twitter and the EPA website.

The Gowanus Canal cleanup was funded by a $3.9 million settlement from Chemtura, a chemical manufacturing firm. A claim filed by the EPA and U.S. Attorney in Manhattan resulted in the funds for the Gowanus Canal Superfund site.
