The reason people surf fish can vary from not owning a boat, to scared of being out in the middle of the water on the boat, or because the fisherman or woman simply prefer it. Some people find it easier to take themselves down the beach when they feel the fish might bite better if they do so. Surf fishing can be more demanding though, patience is required for all fishing but stamina and strength is a requirement for someone to stand on the beach or slightly in the waves for hours at a time. So the better fit you are the better your experience will probably be.
Equipment Needed:
Rods and Reels: First thing is you need to make sure you have a longer than usual rod, in order to cast some fairly long distances., about 250 yards. A great place to buy these specific type rods are http://www.cabelas.com
They have a very nice large selection.
Spinning reel, "bait runner or bait feeder reel" sold by companies Shimano and Okuma they have the better reputation and are the most popular for the surf fishing reels. for more on these specific reels visit http://www.lakemichiganangler.com
Weights and Sinkers:
The pyramid sinker is by far the best for surf fishing. Because of it's pointed tip as well as it's three flat sides that help keep it from rolling away with the tides which can become very bothersome.
For a great place to buy this one particular weight go to, http://www.bulletweights.com
Lures and Bait:
Truthfully everyone has there own favorite type of bait and most fisherman/surf fisherman will swear by
whatever bait it is they use. Whether live bait, worms, eels, etc.. or artificial lures pick out what you thing will bring you luck. Remember though, the smaller the bait the smaller the caught fish will more than likely be. You can go to almost any big named store and find bait, Walmart, Kmart, some major grocery stores especially those found along the coasts.
Other items needed: Bucket for caught fish and a fillet knife and a net to help give you that extra reach you just might need when pulling the fish in.
Best places preferred by many to go surf fishing are off the coasts of, Florida, and Southern California but any coast can work.
