Surfing Legend Andy Irons Found Dead in Dallas Hotel Room

Andy Irons, one of the world's greatest surfers, was found dead in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. TMZ reports that Iron's body was found by a hotel employee around 10:00 a.m.

Irons was staying in Dallas after falling ill and cancelling his immediate plans to return to his home on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, where he lived. The official cause of death has not been confirmed according to the Dallas medical examiner pending the findings in laboratory tests.

Reports from TMZ have claimed that the substance "Methodone" was found in a prescription bottle with another name on the label by the bedside. Other medications were also found in the hotel room but not named.

Irons had just returned from Portugal, where he fell ill and was in route back home from his next completion at the 2010 Rip Curl Pro competition in Puerto Rico, where he withdrew from the event. Irons got stuck in Dallas on a layover.

Irons was 32 at the time of his death in which the family released a statement saying that Irons may have been suffering from dengue fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dengue fever is caused by "any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes." Outbreaks for dengue fever are common in Latin America, but rarely observed in the United States. There is no vaccine for dengue fever at this time. Symptoms include high fever along with severe headaches, severe pain behind the eyes, rash, joint pain, muscle and/or joint pain, mild bleeding of gums or nose, easily bruising, and a low white cell count.

Andy Irons was a professional surfer, winning the world championship in 2002, '03, and '04 and a four time winner of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Billabong, one of Iron's sponsors said he "was one of the greatest surfers of our time."

Irons is survived by his wife of three years, Lyndie, who is expecting their first child, a son, in December, his father, Phil Irons, and brother, Bruce, who is also a pro surfer.
