Surfing Lessons in Waikiki

A Must-Try During Your Visit to Oahu

When I first moved to Waikiki, I had no desire to surf. In fact, I was nearly certain I would never be able to balance myself on a board, and I was sure that I would drown trying. Then, I spent days and weeks, lying on Waikiki Beach, watching a countless number of tourists, including young children, taking their first surfing lessons. Most of them were successful, catching their first waves within their first hour with the board, and then paddling back in triumphantly. Finally, I gave in. And although you won't see me on the professional circuit anytime soon, I'm glad I did. Here is what you should know about taking surfing lessons in Waikiki.

The Island of Oahu is one of the best places to surf in the entire world. Boasting the infamous Bonzai Pipeline up North Shore, during the winter months surfers flock to Oahu from around the globe. And the very best place on Oahu to learn how to surf is in Waikiki. Waikiki has the perfect conditions for the beginning surfer. Waikiki Beach is perfectly shaped and sloped, and the waves are neither too large nor too small; they are very often just right in size, and they spend their energy slowly. While expert surfers may desire more of a challenge, Waikiki Beach is just perfect for beginners.

It is easy to find a lesson. Concessionaires are right there on Waikiki Beach offering lessons for approximately $35 an hour. There are usually five people to a group. I've done both group and private lessons, and I preferred the group. It gave me more time to rest, and it helped watching others (especially when they wiped out). The lessons last about an hour, and you will probably be permitted to keep your board an extra sixty minutes to try out what you just learned on your own.

Believe it or not, you will most likely catch a wave your first time out. Most people do. The beginner boards are large and sturdy; it is almost like standing on a narrow sidewalk. Almost. And it is a thrilling experience, even more so if you have someone on land snapping a photograph of it. (I didn't). One thing you might not realize before heading out to the open ocean is how physically exhausting surfing can be. So, be sure to eat your Wheaties before venturing out.

Once you catch your first wave, you may very well be hooked. So, go ahead and give it a try. Head out to Waikiki Beach and find yourself a friendly concessionaire. It's an experience you won't soon forget.

Aloha, and enjoy your surfing lessons in Waikiki!
