Surfing in Wisconsin

Rik Rodriguez
Certainly when most of us think of surfing we do not normally think of Wisconsin. But my surfing experience in Wisconsin has been an eye opening experience. Having surfed in Hawaii, Florida, California and Washington State to name a few places. Wisconsin never really entered my list of places to surf. I was very accustom to cold water after living and surfing in Washington state for 12 years. So I owned all the equipment to handle cold water. Also I have a few surfboards that would work pretty well in Lake Michigan. Surfing in lake Michigan has a few advantages, one of them being there are no sharks. Or anything that wants to bite you.

Surfing Sheboygan Wisconsin became a every other week event, I would watch the storms in the fall and study the winds to try to determine when and where the waves would be. I remember one time a concerned older citizen called the police, because she thought I was drowning in the lake. I had actually hoped that I looked better than that surfing in the lake. There was great waves and I was getting a pretty good rides all day. One time I drove to Sheboygan in the summer because I had heard that the southerly winds had produced a pretty nice surfing wave. Amazing enough the water temp was over 60 which is warm for the lake. The air temperature was also over 70. Yes I am talking about Wisconsin. By the time the swell had reached the shores of Sheboygan it was over 6 ft. The waves in the little cove I was surfing looked like I was on a secret island some where in the Atlantic Ocean.

Being a surfer that has surfed in the ocean most of my life, I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't surf it myself. I waves came in from deep water, jacked pealed and pitched as they hit a rock ledge. The wave wrapped around the point just like to see in the ocean. I was the only one out in the water enjoying these great waves. Most of the surfers I know would just laugh at the idea of surfing in Wisconsin. I am not laughing anymore. Every time I visit I go surfing. If you ever get a chance to visit Wisconsin head down to the shore of Lake Michigan and you can also witness the waves for yourself.
