The richest man in the world is from Mexico . The wealthiest man does not reside in the United States , Hong Kong , Japan , Europe or the Middle East . Carlos Slim Helu is a 70 year old billionaire valued at $53.5 billion dollars who lives in Mexico City . Mexico is not known as a wealthy nation. However, Carlos Slim Helu shows one can become a billionaire in Mexico .

Helu is a Self Made Billionaire

Carlos Slim Helu is a self made billionaire. He made his money in the telecom business. He "pounced on privatization of Mexico 's national telephone company in the 1990s" to make his fortune. He is also well invested in media, construction, and financial groups.

A Half a Billion Dollars Difference

Bill Gates came up a half a billion dollars short in wealth to Mr. Helu. Warren Buffett was $6.5 billion dollars behind and from there the separation is not even close.

The Rewards of Wealth

According to Forbes Carlos used $44 million dollars to buy a 19,500 square foot townhouse in Manhattan . Obviously the home is located in a wealthy area but being on 5th Avenue makes it one of the most desirable locations in New York .

Giving Back

The richest person in the world donates to charity. Being rich is not about keeping all the money. Forbes reported Carlos Slim Helu donated $65 million dollars to help fund a research project with fellow billionaire Eli Broad for genomic medicine research. According to the New York Times Helu pledged to increase his company foundations endowments by 150% from 2007 to 2011. The endowments will increase from $4 billion dollars to $10 billion dollars.

    A draft dodger from Lebanon, has a monopoly on the telecommunications and media industry in Mexico, controls about 5% of the wealth in Mexico, keeps small businesses from profiting causing mass Exodus to the US. No thanks, not my kind of hero.
