Surprising Things that Can Cause Teeth Problems

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Most people are aware that such things as cola and excessive sugar are bad for your teeth but there are also surprising habits that can cause teeth damage and teeth problems.

Brushing regularly and also seeing a dentist on a consistent basis does help to alleviate some of the teeth damage that is possible from some everyday foods, drinks and also activities but trying to avoid those bad habits as much as possible is the best way to minimize teeth damage.

Here you will find surprising things that are bad for your teeth and can lead to teeth damage and teeth problems.

Swimming in Pools

The chemicals in pools mixed with saliva in the mouth has been known to cause brown type stains on the teeth. A swim now and then in the pool will not cause the teeth any problems, it is the people who are avid swimmers, who swim many hours a week in a pool who may have some staining on the teeth from the pool chemicals. Professional teeth cleaning can help to alleviate some of the staining on teeth and your dentist may have additional suggestions on how to keep the protected from the chemicals in a pool.

Consuming Cough Syrup

Cough syrup may help with coughs and colds but it can cause serious tooth damage and lead to teeth problems in the future. Many people take cough syrup before they go bed at night and unfortunately the residue syrup will stay on the teeth while you are sleeping especially if you do not brush. Cough syrup has sugars and other ingredients that are not good for the teeth, if taking cough syrup is necessary make sure to brush really well and rinse mouth numerous times with water after consuming the cough syrup.

Drinking Orange Juice

Orange juice is high in Vitamin C and great for the body and immune system but orange juice has a high amount of acid, acid is not good for tooth enamel. In fact, acid can eat right through the enamel of the tooth and cause great damage to the teeth. This could be a huge problem for a baby who drinks a bottle and is allowed to suck on the bottle while sleeping, the orange juice or any juice for that matter can stay on the baby's teeth for extended periods of time and cause tooth damage. Again, as mentioned with the cough syrup, making sure to brush the teeth really well and rinsing thoroughly with water helps to remove some of the acid build up that can get on to teeth.

Eating Citrus Fruit

Citrus fruit could possibly fall in the same category as orange juice but the idea of citrus fruit possibly causing teeth damage is really a surprise for many, I believe. The reason that citrus fruit could be bad for teeth is the same issue as the orange juice, it is high in acid. The idea of not eating fruit because of possible teeth problems is silly as fruit is so beneficial to the body, but as mentioned numerous times already, brushing those teeth after consuming high acid type food and liquids is so important.

The activity, medicine, drink and food highlighted in this article are things that can cause teeth damage and are surprising to most people. The ironic aspect is: the 4 things highlighted can also really help the body, so although they can be bad for the teeth I believe the positives from these 4 things outweigh the negatives.

The best thing to do to try and minimize any teeth damage is to brush multiple times a day, rinse really well, floss and see a dentist regularly.
