Surprising Uses for Cider Vinegar and White Vinegar

Using apple cider vinegar and white vinegar for everyday household use is a great way to save money, plus it's good for the environment. Vinegar can be used for cleaning, deodorizing, sanitizing, and much more. In this article, we'll look at several uses for cider vinegar and white vinegar that may surprise you.

Uses for cider vinegar

Improve digestion - Combine 2 teaspoons of cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water and sip slowly (up to three times a day) to improve digestion. It will also help ease an upset stomach.

Remove build-up in your hair - Combine 3 tablespoons of cider vinegar with 2 cups of warm water. After shampooing, rinse your hair with the water/vinegar mixture to rinse out heavy build-up that leaves hair flat and limp.

Relieve sunburn discomfort - Too much time in the sun can burn the skin and cause great discomfort. Saturate a soft cloth with cider vinegar and gently apply it to the skin. Continue this treatment daily until the discomfort subsides.

Clean questionable drinking water - Unsure about the cleanliness of your drinking water? Add a few drops of cider vinegar to a glass of water to kill any bacteria that may be present.

Keep away bugs - Nothing is more annoying than those pesky bugs that can ruin a night on the back porch. Keep them away by placing a bowl of apple cider vinegar beside the seating area.

Remove warts - Have a wart on your foot or hand? Soak the area in 1 part cider vinegar and 1 part warm water for 20 - 30 minutes each day. The wart will soften and eventually disappear.

Uses for white vinegar

Clean stainless steel - Use vinegar to clean flatware, jewelry, and any other materials made of stainless steel. Simply pour a little on a cloth and wipe clean.

Fight off mildew - Prevent mildew from accumulating in refrigerator bins by washing them with plain vinegar. Fight off mildew growth on shower walls, tub drains, and mildew prone walls with vinegar too!

Deodorize with vinegar - Freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and then grind them in the garbage disposal. It will sanitize and deodorize and leave the drain smelling fresh.

Stain removal - Remove stubborn toilet stains by pouring vinegar in the bowl and then scrubbing furiously. Allow the vinegar to sit, and repeat.

In the laundry - Add one cup of vinegar to the wash to remove lint from clothes.

Make glassware shine - Cleaning with vinegar is cheap and easy. Clean the dishes to a sparkling shine by adding two tablespoons vinegar to the dishwasher rinse cycle.

Disinfect with vinegar - Disinfect a cutting board, dish drainer, plastic bins, and so on, by soaking them in vinegar. Rinse clean before use.

Remove stuck-on food - Remove dried on food from a microwave with vinegar. Place a bowl filled with one cup of water and 1/2 cup vinegar inside and then heat 3 - 5 minutes on high. Wipe clean.

Make coffee taste better - Clean a coffeemaker with vinegar. Combine two cups vinegar with one cup water and brew it as you would coffee. Then, follow through by brewing water through the unit 2 - 3 times. Coffee will taste fresher!

Clean the dishwasher - Vinegar can be used to clean the dishwasher. Once a month, add one cup vinegar and allow it to run through an entire cycle. Cleaning with vinegar in the dishwasher will help reduce soap build-up and prevent mineral deposits from forming.

Clear a stopped-up drain - Unclog a drain with vinegar. Pour baking soda down the drain, and the follow with 1/2 cup - 1 cup of vinegar. Run VERY HOT water until the clog comes loose.

Shoo away mosquitoes - Dab a bit of white vinegar on your skin before stepping outside. It will keep mosquitoes and other gnats at bay.

    Back in the days when smoking was more prevalent in my family, an older cousin of mine would place bowls of vinegar beneath her furniture (she thought it was hidden, I think) to absorb smoke odors. And I can attest to the fact that they keep bugs away. It really works. Thanks for this advice.
