Survivalism for the Rest of Us

Jack Spirko and the Survival Podcast

Many have the idea that survivalists are all wild eyed militia, stockpiling weapons and MRE's. In order to dispel that myth, I would like to introduce you to Jack Spirko, who started the survival podcast because of his concerns over our economy and the human condition. One of the main ideas behind the podcast is that as individuals, we control our own destiny. Whether it is by by growing a garden, saving money, or putting up supplies for a rainy day, Jack gives sources and ideas for how be more independent and live life to the fullest.

GETTING OUT OF DEBT

One of the main principles of TSP is getting out of debt. In the last several months we have seen bailout after bailout of companies destined to fail. People are losing their homes right and left. We have a nation addicted to borrowing, whether out of necessity or luxury. Don't spend what you don't have is the message we get here. Live within your means and learn to make do with what you've got.

FOOD

One of those ways is by producing your own food. TSP has great tips for container gardening for urban apartment dwellers as well as those who live on small farms. It's amazing how much food you can actually produce on a small amount of soil (or none at all.) There are even upside-down tomato plants one can hang from the ceiling in a sunroom. Other alternative food sources include hunting, fishing, livestock, permaculture, and barter with neighbors.

WATER STORAGE

If a person can only live for 3-4 days without water, it would make sense to keep a supply on hand. TSP has several options for catching and storing water in emergency situations or simply for sustainable living.

SKILLS

Learning new skills goes a long way towards independence. The old-school philosophy of learning to repair something instead of discarding it is big here. Practice using skills that will make you useful to your community as well, and you will never be out of work. In a day where unemployment is skyrocketing and the value of the dollar is in decline, being able to make or repair what you need is invaluable to you and your neighbors. Suggestions are given for learning trades by working for free or cheap to acquire a skill set, from carpentry to sewing.

EVACUATION/QUARANTINE

What are you going to do in the case of a pandemic, riots, or a natural disaster? On TSP, you will find tips for emergency preparedness in situations where you are forced to leave your home or forced to stay confined to it. Strategies for getting your family on board and communications when they are separated are included.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Survivalism maintains that we live sustainable lives and do what is right by our planet. Solar panels, alternative energy, and sustainable agriculture are all hot topics here.

NO RACISM ALLOWED

Survivalists are often painted by the media as racist. TSP is committed to survivalists of all ethnicity and faith (or none.) Anyone who promotes racism is not welcome.

DEFENSE

Commonsense use of firearms is of great importance when planning for survival in a violent age. Updates on legislation, quality of brands and ammunition, what type of firearm to use in a given situation, and how to train safely and responsibly are a big part of TSP.

GETTING INFORMED ON POLICY

From the history of the Federal Reserve to how certain legislation can affect us, TSP helps to educate us on current issues and long-standing problems we face in our economy. Some of what you hear may surprise you.

In addition to Jack's podcast, he has also included a forum on the website with a growing number of contributors. These offer a wealth of knowledge on these various subjects as well as others. They come from a varied background from around the world.

Jack qualifies his opinions as being only that, while leaving sources for what he states as fact. He strives to make his show as reliable as possible, while still keeping it "real" in that Jetta of his. Jack practices his own message, helping his listeners one by one to live a better life, "if times get tough, and even if they don't."
