How to Prepare for Typhoons
As with anything, the most important thing to do to prepare for a typhoon is to stay informed. Check the latest news updates from several sources.
-Determine if you should evacuate. Listen to local officials and weather personnel.
-Designate a place for you and your family to meet if you get separated.
-If you have pets, find a place for to keep them safe. Most shelters do not allow animals.
-Remember to shut off electricity, water and gas to your home before evacuating.
-Pack plenty of food that doesn't need to be refrigerated.
-Bring plenty of water.
-Make sure you have means of light such as flashlights and lanterns.
-Be sure to have a first aid kit.
-Bring a change of clothes.
-Bring means of entertainment.
-Make sure to bring blankets and ways to keep warm.
-Before leaving, fill the car with gas.
In conclusion, be sure to plan and prepare early for a typhoon, especially if you leave in an area where typhoons occur often.
History of Typhoons
1281 -A Mongolian-Chinese fleet of 4400 ships were scattered and lost in a powerful, deadly typhoon.
1841 -Dreadful typhoon hits Hong Kong.
1864 - Amoy, where typhoons are almost unknown, experienced the rare occurrence of two typhoons in the space of five days.
1874 - One of the worst typhoons hit China's coast killing over 2000.
1905 - Typhoon leaves Philippine coast full of wrecks of steamers.
1934 - Heavy loss of property and lives as Typhoon shatters Luzon Island.
1953 - Very powerful typhoon hits Japan leaving many lives lost. Second typhoon hits the same year in Japan leaving 25000 dead and missing.
1970 - At least 42 persons were reported killed when Typhoon Patsy smashed thru Manila and densely populated Luzon Island in the Philippines.
2000 - Typhoon Bilis strikes Taiwan.
2001 - Typhoon Nari leaves the worst flooding in Northern Taiwan's history.
2005 - Powerful typhoon slams into Vietnam leaving lots of destruction. Typhoon Damrey leaves 16 dead on China's island province of Hainan.
2007 -Typhoon Egay makes 80000 families evacuate.
2009 - As of 4 October, Typhoon Parma affected 68,589 people with two confirmed deaths and 35,543 people andtropical Storm Ondoy left 388 dead.
Typhoons are deadly. They should not be taken lightly. If you live in high risk places for typhoons, stay prepared. Keep updated with the news. Many lives could be saved if people listen and follow the advice of experts. Unfortunately, typhoons generally occur in poor nations so many people do not have televisions and means of getting news quickly and are not prepared. As typhoons continue to be a deadly force of nature, scientists are working hard to improve predictions.
