Survivor April 29 Recap: Heroes Vs Villains
Sandra and Russell Battle to Determine the Future of the Game
The teaser for the Survivor April 29 episode seemed to indicate that evil genius Russell was in trouble. The clip saw Sandra plotting with Rupert to take out Russell. But we've seen that before. Probably a half dozen times over the last two seasons of Survivor, CBS has offered teasers suggesting that Russell was in danger, but he was never actually voted out.
On the other hand, Sandra has played a smart, low-key game, and if she teams up with the Heroes to take out Russell, that would be a huge power move that could turn the game on its head. Would she be able to pull it off?
Survivor April 29 Recap: Fallout from last week's tribal council
Last week Parvati shocked everyone at tribal council by giving away her two hidden immunity idols to Sandra and Jerri, thinking one of them might be in danger. Her hunch was correct. The five remaining Heroes voted for Jerri, but their votes were discarded, and JT went home. That left the Villains with a 5-4 edge among the remaining nine players.
Russell had no idea Parvati had two idols and was not pleased that he was kept in the dark. It was the first time Russell had been surprised at any tribal council in his two seasons of Survivor.
Early in the April 29 episode, Russell confronts Parvati and Danielle about the fact that they kept Parvati's extra immunity idol secret from him. "You lied to me!" he yells at Parvati. But the smooth-talking Parvati defuses the situation, telling him, "You can be mad if you want, but I don't see any harm done in keeping it a secret."
Meanwhile, Amanda tells Rupert to go to Sandra and try to get her onboard with the Heroes, because that's the Heroes' only hope at this point.
Being the keen judge of character that he is, Russell knows he can't trust Sandra, so he wisely goes to Candice to try to bring her onboard with the Villains just in case Sandra jumps ship. Candice tells Russell she's open to the idea, and they make plans to talk later.
Survivor April 29 Recap: Reward challenge
The immunity challenge is a Survivor version of shuffleboard. The nine players are divided into three teams of three who slide pucks along a board with the goal of landing closest to the target. Team one is the black team consisting of Candice, Parvati, and Jerri. The red team is Rupert, Russell, and Sandra and the blue team is Colby, Amanda and Danielle.
After round one the red team holds the edge. The final shot comes down to Colby, who manages to slide his puck right on top of the target for a blue team victory. It's one of the few times Colby has been successful in a challenge all season.
The reward is a private screening of Treasure Island and a night of sleep on a real bed at the one-time home of author Robert Louis Stevenson. Amanda doesn't enjoy the movie at all because she's preoccupied with finding the clue to the immunity idol that she believes must be in the room somewhere.
Danielle finds the clue in the popcorn and tries to sneak it out, but Amanda notices and takes it from her. The girls wrestle for a while, before Colby acts as moderator and actually tells Amanda to give the clue back to Danielle. What is he thinking?! Colby is just such a terrible player this time around. If anything, he should've made Danielle share the clue with Amanda and himself.
Survivor April 29 Recap: Who's going to flip?
Back at camp, Danielle shares the clue with her alliance of Russell, Parvati and Jerri. Guess who finds it? Russell, of course. He finds it quickly under a rock, then sneaks it away before they notice. Since the girls didn't tell Russell about their idol, Russell decides not to tell them that he found an idol.
Russell goes to Candice and shows the idol to her instead of his tribemates. He promises to take Candice to the final three if she joins him. She reluctantly agrees, but it's unclear whether Candice is fully onboard.
Sandra goes to Colby and tells him she wants to join the Heroes. Colby and Amanda are suspicious but decide Sandra has no reason to lie to them. They believe Danielle has the immunity idol so they plan to vote out either Russell or Parvati at tribal council.
Survivor April 29 Recap: Immunity challenge
The immunity challenge is a classic Survivor battle - building a ten-foot-tall house of cards out of tiles. After ten minutes, Jerri and Russell take the early lead. Both are neck in neck and this clearly becomes a two-person challenge as no one else is even close. By just seconds, Jerri completes the tower first and wins her first-ever immunity.
Sandra vows to vote out Russell to get revenge for all of her friends that Russell sent home. "This is for Tyson, Boston Rob, Courtney, and even Coach, who I don't care about, but I'll throw him in there too," she says, smiling.
Back at camp, Candice tells Russell that Sandra has joined up with the Heroes, so he confronts Sandra. Sandra then goes back to the Heroes and tells them that Candice is scheming with Russell. Suddenly, everyone is scrambling. Sandra and Candice have a private conversation in which Sandra begs Candice to stick with the Heroes and take out either Russell or Parvati.
Survivor April 29 Recap: Tribal Council
At tribal council, the Heroes say they all believe Danielle has the idol. Rupert tries to play dumb, saying he believes the Villains are all one tight unit. But Sandra quickly acknowledges that she isn't tight with the rest of the Villains and that her vote is up for grabs.
When Jeff Probst asks if anyone wants to play an idol, Russell stands up and decides to play the idol for himself. But he didn't need to. The Heroes decide to target Parvati, who gets three votes.
Candice decides to stick with Russell and the rest of the Villains, and Amanda ends up with the most votes. She gets voted out and becomes the fourth member of the jury.
Survivor May 6 Preview
The Survivor April 29 recap ends with the preview of next week's episode in which the Villains' alliance appears to be crumbling. "You do that, you're out of this game," Russell yells at Parvati in one clip. Parvati then goes to Jerri and tells her not to change her vote no matter what Russell says. Is the happy Survivor couple of Russell and Parvati going to split up? Stay tuned.
