Survivor of the Sixties

Older but Not yet Old

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

On a really good day
I feel really good
And can do most of the things
I woke up wishing that I could.
Thankfully more alert today
To things I didn't know
That I never fully understood,
There is always room to grow.
Demise is inevitable
But is not yet quickly looming;
This one older
But not yet old boomer
Has not yet
Finished blooming.

An era we believed
Would change the world forever
Sits but never fully rests
In a time not lived
By today's gleaming young;
In their earliest memories
They may recall hearing
Old recordings
Of the songs that once were sung.
Their tunes and words
Sound strange to me,
Our lyrics were how we fought,
But we all share life
And a quest to sort
What's right from what is not.

To find meaning is the challenge
And to improve the world a tad,
The effort is always righteous
Though the elders may be too quick
To label it a fad;
I have survived the sixties
And was lucky to be there
When social unrest served a cause
And gave our lives some flair.

Someday in years not imagined
Children will learn of
Their parent's deeds;
And by listening to the songs they sang
They will find and sow
Their own generation's seeds.

    Those, like me, that are flower children of the sixties can remember the way their parents dressed and the music they listened to while their kids were growing up - things were a lot simpler back then.We also knew enough to obey our parents, who were raised not to sass their Moms and Dads like kids do nowadays.

    Unfortunately, they'll be unlikely to be "listening to the songs they sang" on Yahoo. Enjoyed your words here.

    Where have all those ideals gone?

    A lovely lyrical ode. May it be so.

    I am having such trouble leaving comments - I have to reload several times to get them to "stick" - cheers (sorry if you get two or three comments!)
