Survivors of Hurricane Katrina Overcome Adversity and Open "Chappy's on Church Street"

"Chappy's on Church Street" - Nashville, Tennessee

Vicki Messer
If you live in or near Nashville, Tennessee, or plan to visit the area on business or on vacation, you will want to check out the restaurant called "Chappy's on Church Street".

Chappy's on Church Street, which is known for its Cajun flair, has a very interesting history. Owner and Chef, John "Chappy" Chapman, was forced to flee his Mississippi Gulf Coast home when Hurricane Katrina hit. His restaurant, known as "Chappy's Seafood Restaurant" was completely destroyed on August 29, 2005.

Chappy and his wife, Starr, moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2005 and in June, 2006 the restaurant "Chappy's on Church Street" was opened for business.

Chappy and Starr, are proof that those who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina can overcome and start life over again. Start over they did, and the new restaurant in Nashville is a shining example of overcoming adversity!

Chappy learned his cooking skills from his mother and had a lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant. Chappy's on Church Street is a fine restaurant that more than fulfills that dream. You won't find people coming to Chappy's in shorts and flip-flops. Although it is a casual restaurant, it has a very refined edge.

The menu at Chappy's on Church Street includes:

Sunday's Champagne Brunch, which along with the glass of champagne, you can choose from dishes such as Eggs Benedict, Eggs Rockefeller, Red Snapper, and Prime Rib, all served along with Chappy's homemade breads.

Appetizers, such as Turtle Soup au Sherry, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Fried Calamari, just to name a few.

Entrees include seafood, veal, beef, lamb, chicken, quail, and an assortment of fresh fish. There is also a nice selection of side dishes like Rice du Jour, Sauteed Mushrooms, and Stuffed Potato.

Desserts include Red Velvet Cake, Key Lime Pie, and this one I will have to quote directly from their menu in order to do it justice: "Warm Bread Pudding with Oh-Wee! Pecan Praline Sauce"

For Seafood Lovers, Chappy's on Church Street offers the traditional Seafood Platter available either fried or broiled, as well as a variety of other more specialized seafood platters. They also offer Trout Almondine and Trout Meuniere.

As you can see, there is a wide range of Cajun, French and American style foods available at Chappy's on Church Street in Nashville. The ambience is second to none with the beautiful indoor Parisian street lamps and huge stained glass window. Chappy's on Church Street seats 220 people very comfortably in its 7500 square feet of dining area.

Chappy's also offers catering, either at their restaurant or to go, as well as cooking classes and wine tastings.

To say that Chappy and Starr have survived Hurricane Katrina is a gross understatement. They are thriving in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, proving that life after Katrina is truly possible!

This is really inspiring, shows that people can go back and start over. I know many did not choose to do so but I'd have a hard time not returning to my home state so I understand this completely.
