Show's like Britain's Got Talent and American Idol can get pretty redundant after awhile. Watch a performer sing a song, do a jig or stick their hand in a puppet, rinse and repeat. But, it's moments when someone like Susan Boyle comes along -- and shocks the crowd into a crying, cheering mob -- that make all that time spent in front of the TV totally worth it.
Nobody expected a thing when the 47-year-old Scottish woman shuffled her frame to the center of the giant stage. Everyone chucked, a few rolled their eyes and many cringed, fearing she was about to make a giant fool of herself.
"Who would you like to be as famous as?" said a certain British cynic.
"Ellen Page," replied the curly-haired woman with a quick bob of her head.
This could be devastating.
A few awkward coughs escaped from the crowd just as the music was queued. And then she opened her mouth.
Just like the fairytales where everyone's set against the main character, doubting and sighing with impatience, she surprised us all. Only this is a true story, set in real time, with a real-life woman and not in a book with a princess on the cover.
Within 24 hours over 3 million people had watched her performance on Youtube.com. (Not even a week later and over 11 million people have watched it!)
Why are so people so inspired by Susan Boyle? Because she represents the underdog; the little person with a giant dream who pushed and nudged her way to the front of the crowd until she got the chance to prove herself. Which is precisely what she did.
Susan Boyle dreamed the dream. Not because she wanted sleep in a mansion or buy the coolest new gadgets. Not because she wanted power and fame. She simply had a dream. And then she made that dream come true at the age of 48.
Susan Boyle showed us that we can do anything we want, no matter our age, status or history. And that, my friends, is why Susan Boyle has captured the entire world's attention in less than a week.

I agree with Carol. It's sad to see anyone ridiculed as she was just because she does not have supermodel looks.
Sophie
Excellent article. She was inspirational for showing "you can't judge a book by its cover." I was appalled by the rude reaction she initially got- obviously because of her looks/demeanor- as though it is somehow okay to publicly ridicule people who don't fit a standard ideal of beauty or poise. I wish more attention were directed to this prejudice and encouraging those who practice it to stop.
Excellent article and great topic. You captured what really occurred.
She definatelly is good, great review
I watched this Youtube yesterday and it brought tears to my eyes. We see right there on the screen how people judge her because of her age and looks and then she opens her mouth and everyone is just in shock. It proves that not all talent is in those who look great on the outside. Truly beauty is on the inside of us all.

She has really caused a sensation and moved people who root for the person who doesn't stand out in a crowd but has massive talent. Good for her -and thanks for the article, too!
