Susan Boyle Says, "Suck on that, Bitches!"

Ok Fine, She Never Said This. But She Should Have

What a wonderful birthday present I received yesterday. I love a good underdog story and I found a great one in Susan Boyle, the contestant on Britain's Got Talent who ascended the stage in her frumpy dress and a conventionally unfortunate face. She is a 47-year-old self-proclaimed virgin who has never been kissed by a boy and apparently lives with a bevy of felines in Bathgate, West Lothian in Scotland.

I didn't have the luxury of watching this live. I can't go from what I might have originally thought when she first stepped onto the stage to when she belted out the first note of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables. But the thing about Ms. Boyle is that during her introduction backstage prior to her performance, she does not appear to be delusional or socially inept like many of the contestants we've seen on these shows during the audition episodes who are clearly not fit for singing. She seems to be a woman who is truly comfortable with herself and has finally decided to attempt to make her dreams come true. Sure, she seems a little dorky. (But I'm not one to judge that.) Boyle tells Simon how old she is when he asks, and she seems well aware that her age might seem out of place for someone just beginning to pursue a singing career. But as an afterthought, Boyle swings her hips in a suggestive manner and says, "And that's just one side of me!" The viewer either sees this as a delusional attempt at sex appeal or playful sarcasm on her part. After seeing this, you can see it on Simon's face that he is preparing himself to once again watch someone make a complete fool out of herself.

But everything changes once Boyle sings. Simon's snarky face becomes one of complete shock. His jaw literally drops. Watch it here.

Simon is clearly happy that he has been proven wrong. And I think that's always what he always wants.

It truly is fascinating how easy we are to judge someone based on their appearance. She's sure to find all types of people coming out of the woodwork from her past.

It's great that everyone is coming together to celebrate this woman's victory. But I wish people would remember things like this the next time they're tempted to make another person's life a living hell just because they're a little weird or different.

Did you know that most people are mean and make fun of others just to make themselves feel better? Anyone who is completely happy with who they are will have no urge to make anyone's life miserable.

Little we know of her life, yet we can appreciate she triumphs over it. She mustered enormous courage under the weight of overwhelming negative energy. Looks not, but her cheekiness, her strength, a good person and her magical gift-- surely those count for something. Don't knock a good thing, or we'll all deserve the likes of AIGs & Bernard Madoffs. Susan, have fun and every success.

I still don't like her. I didn't see her and judge her immediately on her appearance. I judged her on her crass and frankly - disturbing - behaviour. She can sing. Well done. But it still doesn't alter her first impression and so far I can say while i like her voice, I certainly don't like her personality.
