Susan Boyle's Frumpy Look and Surprise Singing Talent

Would We Appreciate Her Voice If She Didn't Look that Way?

Susan Boyle--the 47-year-old new discovery in Britain--wowed the entire world with her powerful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables as her audition piece in Britain's Got Talent.

No one expected that a frumpy old woman could dish out a number like that. And we loved her for that. Recently, Susan Boyle had a makeover. And boy, does she look prettier in her new hair.

But now, my husband and I got to thinking, if Susan looked differently, would we love her just the same? Would we be wowed by her talent just the same? My sister-in-law says that there is not much dynamics in her performance, but no one really expected that such a voice could come out from here.

Here is what I think. I am not a music critic. So for me, Susan's performance was already formidable. I loved her singing and wished I had a voice like that. But for those who know their music, Susan's performance was not really extraordinary.

So my question is this, if Susan were younger, or presented herself differently, would we still be awed by her performance? And would we raved about her like we are doing now? I think some people in the audience booed Susan when she strutted to the center of the stage in her outfit and hair. I don't think she even put on make up. But we were all surprised when she started singing. And in the end, Susan got a standing ovation, which she rightfully deserved, after all the maligning that she got on first impression.

Susan has her unique own personality and trademark actuations that endeared her to people around the world. But she still has a lot to prove in terms of talent. Her status, however, has already been elevated to celebrity because of the reviews she got all over the world. How she will present herself eventually is a much bigger question and a bigger challenge for her.

Well, she seems quite confident in herself so I bet she knows how to best handle herself in the next round.

Godspeed to you Susan!
