Susan G. Komen Three-day Walk for the Cure Coming to the San Francisco Bay Area
What One Cancer Survivor is Doing to Help Find a Cure
Why would anyone walk for sixty miles? For some, because they believe in the cause and want to donate on behalf of someone they know who has been a victim of breast cancer. For others, it is more personal. Many women who participate have suffered their own battle with breast cancer. Debbi Sanchez of Gilroy, California is one such person.
Seven years ago, Sanchez became a victim of breast cancer. As a young wife, mother, and daughter she knew there was still too much life left to succumb to her diagnosis. After a long battle, Sanchez came out the victor.
Many women like Sanchez fight the good fight, and lose. Yet some are fortunate and win, as Sanchez did. Her battle was seven years ago. Now she fights for the cure on behalf of others. Sanchez will be celebrating her seven-year anniversary of being cancer free by walking the three-day walk with many of her comrades.
"This year I have 10 friends who have battled against breast cancer.I have made it my mission to help fight. So, for my Seven-year anniversary I will walk for The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, 60-mile walk over the course of three days," said Sanchez.
Not only is Sanchez walking, she is also raising money for the cure. One of the ways she raised money was through a fundraiser she, and her husband Mike Sanchez, put together, held at Fortino Winery in Gilroy, California on August 26, 2010.
The Fortino family generously donated the use of the winery for this event. More than 80 women gathered together for a night of food, fun, and prizes that were donated by many local Gilroy businesses. Each woman there wanted to show their personal support for their friend. At the end of the evening, Sanchez gave a tearful, heartfelt round of thanks to each one in attendance for showing her their "incredible love and support".
Through this one woman's effort, almost $2000 was raised that night. Sanchez continues to fight for herself, her family and friends, and in memory of all the women who lost the battle to breast cancer. Her hope is that one day, women will never again have to go through this life altering disease.
The Bay Area Three day walk for the cure will be held on October 1-3, 2010 starting in San Francisco, CA
