Will Soap Star Crossover Roles Prompt Viewers to Cross Over Networks?

What do you get when you cross Susan Lucci with Wendie Malick? A shot in the reborn-in-L.A. arm for "All My Children," and the potential for a new layer of viewers for TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland."

AMC's move from New York to L.A. a year ago left fans wondering at the network's wisdom behind such unexpected upheaval for the 40-year-old soap's cast and crew. Some fans have been waiting for storylines to start sizzling as many new faces on this hour-long ABC daytime drama are adapting to each other's chemistries.

The recent announcement that cast from AMC and "Hot in Cleveland" would intertwine characters and storylines sounds like it may get things cooking in AMC's kitchen.

"This is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of both shows with similar demos, and we expect each other's viewers to follow from one show to the next," said Brian Frons, president of daytime at Disney/ABC Television Group.

Will Frons' expectations be met? Considering the coupling of these two popular personalities is bound to be intriguing, his goals just might be within reach.

Creatively, the concept that originally tied the two shows together surfaced because of Malick's "Cleveland" role as Victoria Chase, a noted fictional soap star who is envious of Susan Lucci's professional success. In turn, Lucci made a guest appearance on Malick's set last year, which gave Victoria Chase's animosity an added dimension of believability.

Two other familiar AMC faces will also be seen on "Hot in Cleveland," when Michael Knight (Tad Martin) and Darnell Williams (Jessie Hubbard) offer up performances as themselves on this steamy cable TV sitcom.

"We're so excited to partner with 'All My Children' to bring to life this classic TV form when television worlds collide," is how TV Land President Larry W. Jones sums up the multi-faceted show crossover.

These two divine soap queens will tangle across two different networks, as Malick's ABC appearance is slated for "All My Children" on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. EST. Lucci's illustrious presence can be observed in two of TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland" episodes on Feb. 16 and 23 at 10 p.m. EST.

When AMC moved to the west coast, fans breathed a collective sigh of relief upon learning that Lucci committed to keep her role as the show's shining female star, Erica Kane, in the forefront. Presently, Lucci maintains her New York home while meeting AMC production schedules in L.A. Without Lucci's devotion and tenacity, AMC might have lost its long-running, emmy-winning, pilates-promoting, dynamic diva.

Now, Malick's anticipated appearance on AMC combined with Lucci's commanding presence should inject a dose of energy into AMC's daily dilemmas.

Fans of both shows certainly have a great reason to watch next month as these two highly-spirited actresses complement each other in front of the camera, and cross over to each other's side of the TV tracks.
