When carrying out their standing screening duties at the airport, a TSA employee saw a suspicious looking object that resembled a grenade, located in a piece of luggage that had been checked.
On finding the object the TSA contacted the Connecticut State Police. When the police arrived at Bradley International Airport they initiated an emergency safety plan that involved setting up a safe area around the suspect piece of luggage, clearing the curbside areas of traffic and passengers and calling in Connecticut State Police bomb specialists.
When the luggage was investigated by the state bomb specialists is was found to indeed contain a grenade. However, it was concluded that the grenade looked only to be a military souvenir and that it did not have any ability to explode.
The emergency operations carried out at Connecticut's Bradley International Airport interrupted airport activities for just under one hour. Once the police determined that the situation was safe, normal operations at the airport were allowed to continue.
The owner of the luggage was located in the airport terminal by the Connecticut State Police, arrested and taken away for questioning. At the Troop W Bradley International Airport the suspect was presented with charges of breaching the peace and held on a $250 dollar bond.
