SUV's are known for being big cars. To you right now, this might mean that other people will gave way to you because they are afraid of your bigger car, that you and the people in your car will be safer because a big car will be able to take more damage, and that you get to feel more power behind the wheel. I hope that by the end of this article this isn't how you look at an SUV any longer.
The fact of the matter is that even though you have a bigger car, people aren't afraid of you. People do not give way to bigger cars. When you are driving in a smaller car, do you end up giving way to the bigger car just because it is bigger? The answer is that you don't because that is stupid. There are laws. Someone specific has the right of way regardless to whom the bigger car belongs to, meaning when you are driving an SUV and you think someone else is going to give you the right of way, both of you are going to continue as if you each have the right of way and there will be a collision. In that collision, because you have a bigger and you are elevated, you have a larger chance of having part of your car kill the passengers in the other car. This does not mean that you will have much of a larger chance of survival just because you are elevated. You really would be just as safe with a Toyota or a Honda Accord as I mentioned in another article, Getting a Car.
Now if you are getting an SUV because you want to feel powerfull behind the wheel, then an SUV is simply a terrible car to get for that. Sure you are getting just as powerfull an engine as you would with a Mustangue GT or another powerfull car, but you are carrying several times the amount of weight. Therefore, you are not going to be able to accelerate as much or have as much power behind the wheel as you would with a smaller car with a similar engine.
I would also like to mention a few other problems with having an SUV. There are many externalities involved with SUVs being on the road. While people are paying to buy their SUVs, they are not paying for the damage they are doing to society. SUVs single handedly destroy the structure of our roads. They are too heavy! Believe it or not, our roads actually cannot handle all the weight. Politicians are trying to figure out a way to fix it as we speak, but no one has thought of anything yet. It is essential that we simply stop selling SUVs or problems will greatly escalate.
Please take SUVs off our roads for all of our sakes.
